Heres the problem, and the book doesn't really seem clear. Can a PC retry a Diplomacy reroll to change an NPC's Attitude? The book clearly says simple talk and walk rolls are fine, but doesn't covor if you can reroll an attitude check, or how long to wait between them. I told her no, because I didn't want her rolling till her arm fell off. It's pretty easy to make them like a PC, and it's near impossible for the NPC's to react negatively (Indifferent needs less then 1 to become hostile, so it'd take an ugly Dwarf with 9 Charisma and a natural 1 to make them hostile). Should I stand by no and have everything go onn first impressions? Or should I let them reroll every now and then? I fear that eventually everyone in the entire city will love them and give them cookies instead of problems eventually. |

Even if the initial Diplomacy check succeeds, the other character can be persuaded only so far, and a retry may do more harm than good. If the initial check fails, the other character has probably become more firmly committed to his position, and a retry is futile. I'd say if the situation between the PC and the target changes significantly within the course of the campaign, you might let the player try again. Otherwise, I'd let a single Diplomacy role represent all the cajoling that would do any good. |
