| Ioosef09-03-07, 05:31 PM | How can I use the Diplomacy skill to lower a price of an item when I try to buy it? Where can I find those rules? Or do I simply have to change the attitude of the guy selling the weapon to useful or friendly? |
| Jaxgaret09-03-07, 05:35 PM | AFAIK there are no hard and fast rules for such a thing. I may be wrong. |
| navar10009-03-07, 07:41 PM | DM's perogotive. It could be a set DC. It could be opposed rolls. Circumstances could be a factor. Is your character famous/infamous? Shopkeeper personality. Does a particular shopkeeper even allow haggling. |
| Ioosef09-03-07, 07:50 PM | Well, it's a shame there aren't any set rules for that. Thanks for the help. |
| Khadmus09-03-07, 08:02 PM | Complete Adventurer. I think you just have to change it to friendly/helpful, then you get a % discount. |
| Jaxgaret09-03-07, 08:49 PM | Complete Adventurer. I think you just have to change it to friendly/helpful, then you get a % discount. Heh, cool. I hadn't noticed that. |
| Ioosef09-03-07, 11:55 PM | Yeah, I found it, it's on page 98, thanks. Now I've a different question, can I make two different diplomacy checks? Like, can I go from indifferent to friendly, and then from there to helpful? Or does it have to be all in one check? |
| Tedronai09-04-07, 12:48 AM | Generally speaking, as mentioned in the Diplomacy description in the PHB, retries do not produce better results than the first attempt (whether or not that first attempt succeeds being beside the point, the second will not improve the situation) |
| Duelpersonality09-04-07, 10:51 AM | You might also want to look at Rich Burlew's revamp of the Diplomacy skill: http://www.giantitp.com/articles/jFppYwv7OUkegKhONNF.html I've found that it works much better than the standard Diplomacy rules (as the DCs are based on the target, not a locked number). |
| Khadmus09-04-07, 02:07 PM | I think that the CA rules already fix the system enough for that particular use of the diplomacy skill. If I am not mistaken (I don't actually have Complete Adventurer), the merchant's diplomcy modifer is added to the check DC already. |
