so how do any of you feel about incooperating the d20s' FEATS book into dungeons and dragons. and more specifically how do you feel about the weapon mastery and elite weapon mastery feats?
(weapon mastery- your training and skill with certain weapon is so extensive you deal damage as if weapon was one size category bigger.)
(elite weapon mastery- your training and skill with certain weapon is so extensive your weapons critical multiplier increases by one, from a x3 to a x4 and so on.) ???
should they be allowed or not. i mean a monks damage improves as he advances, what chance does a character with a d6 or d8 plus whatever have against 2d8s or more(if you use improved natural attack, you can increase a monks damage) wheres the love? so how do you feel about it??

I pretty much allow only core so a/g out of D20 would go under an electron microscope before be used.

Where can I find this book? Oh, by the way I'm using my Wii to type this. Isn't cool?!

I would allow it on a case by case basis. Those two given dont sound to me any more powerful than say improved crit, which expands the crit range the other way.

It really depends on the prereqs given.

(weapon mastery- your training and skill with certain weapon is so extensive you deal damage as if weapon was one size category bigger.)Mechanically problematic, as its effect varies wildly by weapon size. A small rapier gains a net +1 (1d4 -> 1d6), which is significantly less than Weapon Specialisation. A medium greatsword gains +3.5 (2d6 -> 3d6), which is almost twice Weapon Specialisation, and stacks with both it and GWS. And it gets even bigger with some Large weapons.

Monk INA, aside from being ambiguous, is at least clearly qualified as to what someone might apply it to.
(elite weapon mastery- your training and skill with certain weapon is so extensive your weapons critical multiplier increases by one, from a x3 to a x4 and so on.)There's two mechanical problems and one design problem.

(M1): it doubles the crit effect of high-range weapons (rapier goes from 18-20/x2 to 18-20/x3) but is less effective on high-value weapons (pick goes from 20/x4 to 20/x5, a +1/3 increase in crits).

(M2): it multiplicatively stacks with Improved Crit or Keen, which is a no-no. It should only affect the original range (which then becomes slightly more complex to adjudicate).

(D1): Increasing range reduces the effect of randomness. Increasing multiplier increases the effect of randomness. Randomness makes the game less predictable, increasing the relative value of luck (good or bad) over good judgement, and ultimately increasing the likelihood of non-heroic PC death.

Yeah, I've done that. It's awesome.

Most 3rd party feats, items, and PrCs are usually within a hairs width of balance with WotC published material when not combined with some other effect (3rd party or otherwise) to form an abusive synergy.

Weapon mastery in particular sounds innocuous, but what happens if you combine it with a half-giant weapon grafting king of smack build?

As for comparing armed characters damage totals against a monk's, I must say that you are severly overestimating a monk's combat value. Most damage after a certain level isn't done by the damage dice, but by enhancement bonuses, strength, power attack, elemental damage, oh, and actually hitting every attack (something a monk has a very hard time doing).

Mongoose is rather infamous for imbalanced material. I wouldn't allow those feats most likely but the real danger is that you need to understand how powerful something is when you add it into the game.

I'm nearly certain he's referring to AEG's FEATS book, actually. Not that it makes a difference; a great deal of AEG's material is wildly unbalanced in and of itself.

If you want seriously broken weapon mastery feats, check AEG's 7th Sea book, Swashbuckling Adventures. That's where those feats originally appeared and, believe it or not, they're even more broken in the original source.
