I havent been in a group where even one person has had a item creation feat or used one. At the very most I see them as an excuse as to why a npc wizard has a golem or something like that.

Does anyone else have them for a character? It seems like xp costs are just too much to give away and also take weeks to make something for most items thus you miss out on rp time and you fall behind.

The Artificer may well be my favorite class, so I get them a lot.

One thing to remember is that the 3.5 XP system self-corrects. If you fall a level behind, you will recieve more XP until your level evens out with the rest of the group.

Secondly, the game should involve downtime at some point, so rather than having to 'sit out' the DM just fast-forwards time and then you move on with it.

The ability to create magic items at 1/2 market price (with xp expenditure of course, but well worth it) and access the correct items you want, rather than rely on random item drops....potentially allowing you to exceed your wealth guidelines...what's not to like?

Most of the time, I only ever use Scribe Scroll, I don't like pumping XP into the other things - but that's because I hate falling behind, even a little bit :P.

The items are very useful though.

I use them in the game I run. The game I play in is low magic and the GM doesn't allow you to take a new feat with out some one to teach it to you or a tome of lost knowledge to learn it from. So our 17th level wizrds party (yes a party of all wizards) Is raiding every lost library we can find to get item creation feats.

I have also seen others take them. The XP cost is insignificant, IMO; it doesn't matter at all until you fall behind a level, and then you start earning more XP than your companions for the same encounter, which means you quickly catch back up. The time requirement can be a real problem, though, if your DM doesn't make sure to arrange enough downtime.

My primary character has lots of them:
Scribe Scroll, Create Wonderous Magic Item, Create Magic Arms and Armour, Craft Construct and Construct Grafting.

The only one I haven't used is Scribe Scroll.

Yep, it is easy enough to get at least one in, Craft Weapons and Armor is my personal favorite. The Cleric I ran took it (I am a kind and generous Cleric). Summon Monster 1 gives you the bane ability. We had lots of +1 Bane weapons. ;)

Craft Wondrous is probably the best for Wizard types though.

I have them on almost every single spell casting character I play.

I also use them as much as possible in games where the DM follows the rules of XP awarding. In other words, I try to use it to the extend that I am one level behind and thus receiving more experience per encounter which more than covers my needs to item creation for the whole party.
