Power of the Hoard

You gain strength from your wealth.

Prerequisite
You are a true dragon, you have a hoard.

Benefit
For every 10,000 gold piece value in non-magical treasure in your hoard, you gain 1 ability score point, distributed as you wish.

By sleeping on your hoard for 8 hours, you can redistribute these points.

Normal
Treasure just looks pretty.

One of my PC's is playing a shadow dragon using the Draconomicon rules. He has stated that he wants to build up a horde but I worry that he will fall even further behind in power level by not spending his share of the wealth. The only other feat concerning wealth in this way that I can think of is Vow of Poverty, which is obviously much more powerful than this but also much more limiting.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this feat?

Sorry to nitpick, but shouldn't it be "hoard"?

I'm not familiar with the feat and don't know enough about game balance to really give you a good opinion. It's the kind of feat that I know that a player of mine might eventually be interested in though, she'll probably be going for Dragon Disciple and I know that she wants her character to have a penchant for collecting shiny things, and this would actually reward her for doing so.

I do worry a little about her power level, she is playing as a ranger right now and will probably take a couple levels of bard or a level of sorcerer to meet the requirements ... we don't have access to any of the books for fancy classes like Hexblades and I fear that she may not enjoy herself as much if her role-play choices end up overly "gimping" her character.

I don't want to overly coddle her either though, or give her any sort of unfair treatment. A dilemma.

Ok, I fixed the spelling to the pile of treasure instead of mob of nasty combatants.

I wrote the feat, it isn't out of any book, that is part of why I'm asking for advice on it.

I would go with a suite of smaller bonuses, similar to Vow of Poverty. Letting the thing hulk out and get +20 to Strength for the same price as a +10 weapon probably isn't a terribly good idea.

He really needs to find a kobold community. They will mine jewls and precious metals, plus give almost all of it to their true dragon resident. Kobolds are better smiths than dwarves and are revealed (in races of the dragon) to be the main source of many dragon hoards. That way the dragon gets his hoard, but agree with the DM that his hoarding instinct will prevent him from spending it. Also his kobold helpers could be a source for quests. "Master, our miners have opened a new part of the Underdark. We wish to mine more for your hoard, but our body count exceeded 1,000 today. Should we continue, or retreat out of the Underdark?"
