Dragon Familiar

Type: General
Source: Draconomicon

When you are able to acquire a new familiar, you may select a wyrmling dragon as a familiar.

Prerequisite: Cha 13, Speak language (Draconic), arcane spellcaster level 7th, ability to acquire a new familiar, compatible alignment.
Benefit: When acquiring a new familiar, you can choose a wyrmling dragon.

From SRD
Familiar Basics
Use the basic statistics for a creature of the familiar’s kind, but make the following changes:

Hit Dice
For the purpose of effects related to number of Hit Dice, use the master’s character level or the familiar’s normal HD total, whichever is higher.

If my understanding is correct, then a level 13 sorc with this could have a young silver dragon. Or is it based on age?

Thanks in advance :)

You only get a wyrmling, and once the dragon ages enough and is no longer a wyrmling, he then leaves your character.

I am going to have to go with common sense on this one and say you are wrong, unless you can prove it. A wyrmling grows to a young dragon in 5 years from birth... This would be the most pointless feat in the world. Once again unless you can provide proof, I would like another's explanantion

the feat may be too poerful
lets say an elf sorcerer was able to get a silver dragong wyrmling when he was 120. that is is 3 yeaqr older thenthe minuim for an elf sorcerer and in 3 years should be able to cast spells that high
an elf lives for almost 750 years if you were bale to egt the max if just getting the average that is 550 years so the dragon ages another 430 years an old dragon having a FAMILIAR WITH A 35 AC AND A BREATH WEPON OF 16D8 is way too powerful.
all the charachter has to do is simi retire and be able to beat most people and armies by himself
i do not see that many dragon staying a familiar to an elf for 400+ years

You're missing information. The Draconomicon actually has a chart that shows what types of dragon familiars you can get and at what level you can get them. To get the complete description of the feat, you need to get your hands on the book.

And Grim04 is right, the feat only grants you a wymling dragon. As soon as it advances beyond that age, it stops being your familiar.

Edit: And a dragon's growth is based on age. A dragon can gain additional HD/class levels, but they won't advance the dragon in natural size and abilities. The Draconomicon goes into this in great detail.

I think draconomicon explicitly states that your wyrmling familiar does leave you when it gains an age category. Still, you have a few years of benefits, and depending on your dm, they may not even keep track of time elapsed anyways...:D

But seriously, a wyrmling gold dragon is already ECL12. Having one as a cohort is already useful enough, but acquiring one as a familiar?

All right thanks all. Looks like my common sense has once again failed me. I don't have the book, and my dm doesn't really keep track of time,so looks like I get a permanent wyrmling familiar

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I was responding to the OP, not you. My apologies.

In addition to what everyone else said, you're misinterpreting the SRD. Those rules are for how much HD your familiar has. It's not rules for what familiar you can get. It's just advancing your toad or whatever to be able to actually survive a stray arrow. And technically all dragon age categories are entirely different monsters. If you look at the dragons entry closely you can advance their HD but only to a certain point before they need to age to advance.
What you were trying to do was HD advance a creature into an entirely different and much stronger creature.

Alright thanks all, I was actually kind hoping that it would stay a wyrmling.
Grim04, reading my old post it seems a bit arrogant about what I said about the common sense. I didn't intend to sound so arrogant. My apoligies

Its quite possible that a dragon familiar will take longer to develop than a non-linked wyrmling dragon would. While it it linked to you, it cannot gain 'normal' hit dice as a growing creature would.
Or that once your familiar has grown up, you may be placed as mentor to another dragon.

Both are options that a DM might use to avoid the character having to retrain the feat if there is a long-running campaign, or a significant amount of downtime.

it leaves you after 5 years, w/o any penalties on you.

And you now have a slot open to get a new one....

Really? I though you still had to wait for 1 year and 1 day before you could acquire another familiar?

Not for a dragon familiar that leaves you after it advances age categories, if I remember correctly. This is an exception to the normal penalties that come from a familiar's dismissal or death.
