| EdrickTheGreat10-06-07, 03:16 PM | Here's something a few of my friends and I through together for a homebrew campaign. The druid transformed into I think a mouse and held onto the arrow of an archer. When they were jumped by enemies, he wanted to be shot at this cleric, bringing him out of delay. Mid flight he wanted to Animal form into a black bear and get bonuses to his attack. I figured that if the druid would be moving so fast (as an arrow tends to) he should take some impact damage himself. So I tried to devise some sort of rule for this. I'm not sure yet if I should make a feat required yet or not. Opinions please Druid Tipped Arrows Because of the weight distribution being off for the archer, she/he must take a -4 to her shot within the first 30ft. For every 10ft after that she/he must take another -1 to hit. On the druid's behalf, he/she must make a STR DC10 within 30ft. For every 10ft after that the DC is increased by 2. Failure results in 1d6 self damage for the first 30ft, and 1d6 for every 10ft after. Damage: Size Self Enemy Special Small 1d4 1d6 Medium 1d6 2d6 +4 to grapple Large 2d6 3d6 Instant grapple win Huge 1d6 5d6 Instant pin Gigantic 1d4 7d6 Collasal 1d4-2 10d8 |
| Legdiwena10-06-07, 03:43 PM | When he shifts to black bear he would make arrow collapse under his weight too. Don't think the druid should take any damage for that. |
| EvilVegan10-06-07, 03:51 PM | I had first thought the title was not exactly accurate. Then I found it was. Technically the druid has a forward momentum capable of pushing exactly his weight at exactly the speed of the arrow, but if you increase his weight you decrease speed (the amount of forward momentum determined by force technically) by a large amount. Effectively the moment he started increasing in mass he would slow. Try throwing a rock and then throw a boulder. Then imagine both as a parabola coming from your hand. The point at which the rock turned into the boulder you switch the parabola over to the other one, with reduction for the momentum already lost. Rock: O/ ````````-----____ rock ends up <\ ```--__ | /\ `-_ \ / Boulder: O/`-_ <\ `-_ /\ /:::\ <---- boulder Mixed: Rock: SWITCH! O/ ````````X-_ <\ `-_ /\ /:::\ <---- boulder Basically I'm saying, that while this is still really cool for instant movement, there is no velocity damage. I'd make the enemy flatfooted and maybe give a charging bonus, but that's about it. |
| El_Machinae10-06-07, 09:23 PM | There's no velocity damage IF momentum is conserved in DnD. Given that Manyshot deals x2 damage ... I'm tempted to say that momentum isn't conserved. The druid should shift into a rhino! Or a chicken! http://www.skydivingstunts.com/images/movie_posters/small/hot_shots_part_deux.jpg |
| tygreen10110-06-07, 09:52 PM | while you guys are all trying to calculate how far he would go and how much damage he would do and etc.. etc.. etc... I'm still trying to figure out how a mouse is going to hold onto an arrow. even if the mouse securely wrapped his paws around the shaft.. the shaft that rubs the bow as it is launched scraping his fingers across the bow. which would hurt A LOT. and I don't think he would be launched very far. find someone who is good with a bow and then see how accurate he is with string wrapped around the shaft of the arrow. I don't think he will be very accurate with it AND do to a change in the friction, the arrow may loose some velocity... I can see the druid rolling to stay on. a concentration check to not let go from the damage of scraping knuckles and maybe a strength check to hold on.... wow. that's a ride you'll NEVER forget. |
| El_Machinae10-06-07, 10:08 PM | Those poor mousie fingers ... :( |

Opinions please [quote] Only one real problem: A small mammal will not have the strength to hold on to an arrow that is being fired from a bow. Now if you were to TIE the mouse to the arrow then there is a fortitude save to prevent black out, or acceleration damage. But if were tied up then there is a problem with transformation. |
| EvilVegan10-07-07, 01:02 PM | How about tying him to the end of the arrow with a string? I mean, it would snap a normal mouse in half (like a mouse trap does) but hey, this is D&D, we can fall a million feet and take only 20d6 damage and walk away. |

Since you are using an ability to magically increase your mass, it doesn't work. This problem is also complicated because there is no real world way to run this experiment. An easier way to think about it would be to think of it as an inelastic collision with an object traveling the same velocity and direction as the original arrow. Nice diagrams, btw. :D |

I had initially included the disclaimer "Of course, this is all mostly moot because 'well, it's MAGIC'" Nice diagrams, btw. :DThanks! |
| Archangel_Tyrael10-07-07, 01:34 PM | Yea. . . I had initially included the disclaimer "Of course, this is all mostly moot because 'well, it's MAGIC' Besides, it's far more awesome to send a bear at someone at 120+ FPS. :D |
| tygreen10110-07-07, 03:26 PM | this reminds me of a 1st or 2nd edition story I once heard. a mage developed the paladin killer sling stone. he took a HUGE boulder, bigger than a man. and then shrunk it multiple times. to the point that it was the size of a sling stone. loaded it into his sling, launched it at a paladin and when the stone hit the Paladin's special Dispel magic aura, the stone returned to full size and the paladin was squished dead. |
| EdrickTheGreat10-07-07, 07:44 PM | Besides, it's far more awesome to send a bear at someone at 120+ FPS. :D We're just waiting untill he's a higher level druid so he can turn into a sperm whale. |
| Operation_Shoestring10-07-07, 11:13 PM | This thread is made of pure comedy gold. Reminds of the the "backpack warrior" prestige class. EDIT: Have the druid shapeshift into a gecko instead of a mouse, and your concerns about him not being able to hold on to the arrow are SOLVED! |
| Crebain10-13-07, 05:52 PM | Okay, so i'm just wondering would the druid do more damage the higher the ranger shot him into the air. |
| Ninja_Ferret10-13-07, 06:04 PM | Launch the arrow like an arc. Shoot it straight in the air at an angel so they can fly farther. They arrow probably wont hit or do damage but thats not the effect this is going for. Its just to move the druid on someone elses turn. :D |
| EvilVegan10-14-07, 08:32 AM | I wouldn't recommend shooting at an angel, some of them shoot back. |
| Darth Sephiroth10-14-07, 05:22 PM | One option would be to have an eagle animal companion and have the companion fly you up high and then use you as a druid bomb... |
