( Im not sure if it fits here )

My players encountered an opponent who used pipes of pain (DMG).
Now they will encounter him again and now they want to seal their ears (wax, etc.).

How should i rule this? Does it work, so they dont here anything? or are there a chance they here something (like 50%). Or doesnt it work at all?

I have no idea... so thanks for help.

They are voluntarily, temporarily deafening (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/conditionSummary.htm#deafened) themselves, and should suffer all appropriate consequences. The sonic attack (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/specialAbilities.htm#sonicAttacks) section also explains exactly what this process will protect them from.

The use of earplugs is covered in A&E page 22 which is "Earplugs grant a +1 circumstance bonus on saves against sonic attacks, but they also impose a -4 penalty to listen checks." The use of earplugs doesn't cause the person to be deafened, they reduce the surrounding noise level. This would probable cause a spellcaster to have a 10% chance to spoil a spell cast.

Judicious use of Silence would go a long way here. Earplugs just aren't going to cut it...

A&E is 3.0. The sonic attacks link above is from the 3.5 SRD, and should take precedence.

Yes, they are. Again, the link.

Actually, I'll just quote the passage straight up:
Sonic Attacks

Unless otherwise noted, a sonic attack follows the rules for spreads. The range of the spread is measured from the creature using the sonic attack. Once a sonic attack has taken effect, deafening the subject or stopping its ears does not end the effect. Stopping one’s ears ahead of time allows opponents to avoid having to make saving throws against mind-affecting sonic attacks, but not other kinds of sonic attacks (such as those that deal damage). Stopping one’s ears is a full-round action and requires wax or other soundproof material to stuff into the ears.
