Recently my Wizard took the Fiery Burst feat from Complete Mage. He already had Energy Sub(Cold). Fiery Burst gives "fire based spells are cast as 1 caster level higher". I play this as if I get the bonus on fire spells, but not on fire spells that I use Energy Sub on. ex. lvl10 Wizard casts Fireball at level 11, but would only cast Iceball at level 10. Or is it still a fire spell that just happens to deal cold damage meaning the Iceball should be caster level 11?

When you change it to Cold it not only changes the damage done but also the descriptor.

With the descriptor [Cold] and not [Fire] it no longer qualifies for Fiery Burst.

Caster level = 10.

Note however, that it can also work in your favor.

An Elemental Subsition [Fire] on a lightning bolt makes it qualify for Fiery Burst.

Thank you. That's what I thought. I don't really see a need to switch a spell to fire based, right now, since a good chunk of my spells are fire based, but it is good to know I can do that if I need a quick cold spell for a bonus.
