Evasion-like ability that applies to Fort and Will? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Are there any feats or class abilities out there that grant an evasion-like ability that functions the same way for Fort or Will saves?

If not, what do you all think of the balance of such an ability?

Example:

Vigorous (Ex): A [CLASS] is hearty enough to ignore the effects of some magical and unusual attacks. If he makes a successful Fortitude saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, he instead takes no damage. A helpless [CLASS] does not gain the benefit of vigorous.

Defiant (Ex): A [CLASS] is difficult to harm by magical or unusual attempts to bend the mind. If he makes a successful Will saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, he instead takes no damage. A helpless [CLASS] does not gain the benefit of defiant.

It's called Mettle. Pious Templar from Complete Divine gets it, and I know they're not the only ones. It turns any save that reads "Fortitude Partial" or "Will Partial" into "Fort/Will Negates." It's a cool ability. I think the Sohei also got it (from OA).

So it's out there.

It is important to note that it works for BOTH Fort and Will saves, not one or the other.

It is balanced because there are far fewer spells and they do less damage.

Here's how you can get Mettle (from Surreal's Lists of Stuff (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=662842)):

Mettle
Hexblade 3
Pious Templar 1, ecl 6, Complete divine
Vigilante 9, ecl 14, Complete Adventurer
Witch Slayer 2, ecl 7, Tome of Magic
Sohei
Crusader 13, Tome of Battle
Deneith Warden 5, ecl 9, Eberron: Dragonmarked
Master Specialist (abjuration) 7, ecl 10, Complete Mage - works for all saves, see text
Argent Fist 8, ecl 13, Faiths of Eberron
Hellreaver 4, ecl 9, Fiendish Codex II

Honorable Mention
Iron Mind 5, ecl 10, Races of Stone - "mettle of will" affects will saves only
Goliath Rogue 2 racial substitution level, ecl 3, Races of Stone - "mettle of mountains" affects Fort saves only, improves if later gain

The reason Mettle is rarer, it might also be worth pointing out is that while effects that require Reflex save typically do the most damage, it is effects that require a Fortitude or Will save that either take your character out of a fight or flat out kill them.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

One thing about Mettle I thought of as I read the replies is that there are very few spells that will deal half damage with a successful Will save. The inflict wounds spells are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head (I'm sure there are others) but they don't get cast very often.

I'm not as familiar with splat book material. Are invocations or other PrC abilities more built on "Will for 1/2 damage" abilities?

It works on Will and Fort Partial as well, so it works on Shout, Horrid Wilting, Sound Burst, Holy Smite, Harm, Disintegrate and the like.

Evasion only works on Reflex Half, however.
