Since a character takes additional penalties for wearing armor he isn't proficient with, would he have to take a feat to get proficiency if the armor he was buying ended up not having a check penalty.

My Dm is allowing the Definitive Harness from Arcana Evolved which has a check penalty of -4, making it mithral would reduce this to -1, and I have a feat, Heavy Armor Optimization, that further reduces the check penalty of heavy armor by 1. Notice that the feat will still work, because mithral is considered "one category lighter than normal for the purposes of movement and other limitaions.

If this doesn't work, someone say something...otherwise just focus of the need for a feat in order to simply wear the armor.

You suffer the ACP of the armour if you are not proficient.
If said armour has an ACP of zero, then you suffer 0 penalties, or no penalty at all.

This means a psion or commoner can wear leather armour and the like without any penalties whatsoever.:)

So would that mean I wouldn't need to take the feat?

Nope. It is like saying that you broke the law and need to be fined, but I am just going to fine you a grand sum of $0.:)

Considering that the ACP is 0, this works. You will take a -5' penalty to your speed, however, in addition to the speed reduction from heavy armor. That penalty exists if you're not proficient in the appropriate sort of articulated armor (which the Definitive Harness arguably is).

This sort of thing is why the default AE setting bans mithral. (Though spell failure is probably a bigger reason.) Still, if your DM allows it, go ahead.

The amusing thing was that I'd done something like this (http://killfear.pbwiki.com/V:%20Equipment) for a PbP game.

I should mention that my character is a Dwarf, I don't know if that will have any effect on the speed reduction...even though the Definitive Harness is articulated. The AE book doesn't address any race that can move at full-speed in heavy armor.

And that we are playing in the Eberron, so mithral is available :D .
