There is a spell (druid 2 creeping cold)that has a fort save for half damage and the spell description says that the damage is cumulative each round starting at 1d6 on the 1st round and 2d6 on the second round and 3d6 on the third round.

The duration of the spell is only 3 rounds. He is asking if he can use Extend spell metamagic feat for this spell. The feat make any spell last twice as long as normal. The only stipulation is it does not work with instantaneous, permanent, concentration spells. It uses 1 spell slot higher than normal.

This spell is a 2nd level spell and if he were to use it on the spell he wanted then he would cast it at a 3rd level spell and theoretically do a total damage of 21d6 damage lasting over 6 rounds and there is only a save for half damage. Overpowered? I have checked all the errata and cant find anything.
It could be used for things like heat metal and so on, as the wording goes. I almost want to say the intent of the feat is to make other spells longer, such as passive buffs and so on, not spells that damage. Input?

Thats one of the spells which is up to your dm on how to rule.

Extending (and empowering) creeping cold is a nifty thing to do.
Your DM just has to decide wether or not the damage stops increasing after round three (1d6+2d6+3d6+3d6+3d6+3d6)
Or that it keeps going on (1d6+2d6+3d6+4d6+5d6+6d6) which is a lot more powerful.

I'd allow it.

Might even give it a golf clap.

It's about time someone figured out a way to make druids playable.

Thats sarcasm right?
Druid is perhaps the single most powerful class in the entire game. It doesn't need help with that.

First of all, some people have over-simplifed things due to greed. Don't give the answer you WISH, give the answer that is FAIR.

Here are the possible ways to rule on Extend Spell, all logical, for the Creeping Cold spell.

Strict:
1d6
1d6
2d6
2d6
3d6
3d6

Loose:

1d6
2d6
3d6
1d6
2d6
3d6

Power:

1d6
2d6
3d6
3d6
3d6
3d6

Anything Goes:
1d6
2d6
3d6
4d6
5d6
6d6

-------

Not all feats work well with all spells. The strict version (which is usually worse than not using the feat) is JUST as logical and reasonable as any other version.

The loose version is extraoridinary fair. It is identical to casting the spell twice, which is pretty much what the Extend feat is SUPPOSED to represent.

The Power version represents an extension of the duration but not anything else. The power of the spell does NOT increase, there is no sudden ability to hit the far colder version. It is better than Empower, most of the time, despite the fact that Empower is +2 and Extend is +1.

The Anything Goes version is frankly ridiculous. Compare the extended Creeping Cold to the Greater Creaping Cold, and you see why. No reasonable DM would allow it except if the game is far more powerfull.

I did not oversimplify because of greed. The other methods never ocurred to me. Calling me greedy isn't something I like.

Could have sworn i replied to this thread this morning.. hrm.

anyhoo.

Do your combats typically last 6 rounds, for it to matter?

(and as a previous poster said- who also seems to have been deleted..-scratches my head in confusion)
remember to enforce the material component for the spell.

If he's willin to tote around jars of water and such to cast the spell, let him have his 6 rounds.

at least- until he fails a reflex save.

Radjis hinted that druids is the most powerful class. I will just say it. Druids are the most power class.

You do not have to enforce the material component if it doesn't have a cost. And since, last time checked, Jug of Aquifina/other type of overpriced water is not a magic item in this game, I don't see the point of being such a stickler that he has to carry around jugs of water. When was the last time you told a wizard to make sure to stock up on guano the next time they hit town?

Lokenarin, it's bad form to cross-post like this. You should pick one forum and stick with it.

You do not have to enforce the material component if it doesn't have a cost. The focus component for creeping cold costs at least 25 gp. It's also quite fragile (being a "small glass or pottery vessel"), so it's perfectly appropriate for the DM to (1) insist that the character have the focus component available to cast the spell and (2) pay special attention to circumstances that might cause the component to break.

If he's willin to tote around jars of water and such to cast the spell, let him have his 6 rounds.

My only reference is the Complete Divine, so it might have changed in the Spell Compendium; however, the component is a Divine Focus and, as such, is not consumed, so you only need one.

In regards to the topic at hand, I interpret it as the "Strict" version above, though another, more strict, interpretation is that the damage stops after the 3d6 and the spell itself continues for 3 more rounds without statistical effect. I wouldn't be that cruel (and if I was going to use that interpretation, I would tell the player before finalizing his spell list for the day).

Your thing that detects sarcasm...it appears to be working perfectly.
