Quick question:

I'm aware that the Sage ruled that the Extra Spell feat did not allow you to select spells that are not on your classes spell list.

My question is where online can I find this ruling? Does anyone have a link?

Thank you in advance.

You're looking at this upside down.

Firstly, a "ruling" is the application of a rule to a specific situation. Therefore the FAQ statement is the ruling that you are asking for.

Secondly, the ruling is based on the fact that Extra Spell does not explicitly state that the feat adds the chosen spell to the featholder's class spell list.

Since the feat does not say that it does, it does not.

(By comparison, there are PrC abilities and even the Arcane Disciple feat, that do say that.)

No character can cast a spell that is not on their class spell list.

Thus what you are looking for - an explicit statement in the rules - is not present. However, the absence of an explicit statement that the feat adds the spell to the spell list clearly shows that the feat does not add spells to the character's spell list. The FAQ ruling confirms this.

Apparently I made the question unclear...

I'm not interested in debating the what the Sage said - I'm only wondering where I can find a link to the question and answer. I checked the 3.5 FAQ and it wasn't there.

I was hoping to provide a link to a friend who was interested in the topic.(Snipped some explanation for brevity.)

Ah, my apologies. I did misunderstand your question.

Unfortunately, you must have missed the question, which does in fact appear in the 3.5 FAQ. You'll find it on page 27 of the October 07 version. It reads :Can the warmage (Complete Arcane) benefit from the Extra Spell feat?
No. Extra Spell lets you add one spell to your list of spells known, but the spell must be taken from your class spell list. Since the warmage already knows all the spells on his class spell list, this feat has no effect.ETA : I see you managed to locate the answer while I was drafting.
