Prerequisite: Caster level 3rd
Benefit: You learn one additional spell at any level up to one lower than the highest level of spell you can currently cast. Thus, a 4-th-level sorcerer (maximum spell level 2nd) gains a new 0-level or 1st-level spell known with which to expand her repertoire. For classes such as wizard that have more options for learning spells, Extra Spell is generally used to learn a specific spell that the character lacks access to and would be unable to research.

Those are the relevant two sections.
I was looking for a way to expand a warmage spell list beyond just Eclectic Learning (PHBII) class feature specially since I might want to take a prestige class.
However, this feat does not dictate limits. It does not say it has to be from your class's spell list. It doesn't even say it has to be of the same type (divine or arcane).

So.. would it be useless for a warmage, since warmage I'm not even sure warmage normally even allows for research, or could I take Heal if I had 7th level access? Or is it somewhere in between?

Me, I'd be happy with just access to the Wizard's spell list (Advanced Learning class feature meantions specifically wizard's evocation spells). But Heal wouldn't hurt.

In particular, check out Risner's post at the bottom of the 2nd page where he gets an official answer from a CS.

That is where you are wrong. Because the feat Extra Spell does not say it can be from any spell list, you are restricted to class spell lists.

There is no reasonable rules (RAW) argument that Extra Spell allows spells from any spell list.

I have working search.

If you don't have working search, then you could still do it via www.google.com site:wizards.com
