My group is moving into the home/stronghold building levels so I've been looking through the Stronghold Builders Guide, and something looks a little odd to me. A regular smithy costs 500 GP while a "fancy" smithy costs 2000 and gives a +2 circumstance bonus on blacksmithing, armorsmithing, and weaponsmithing.
But, masterwork tools for all of those would only cost 165 GP, so it would be much cheaper to just get a regular smithy and masterwork tools.

Now, obviously, things shouldn't always be exact, but 165 vs 1500 seems a bit extreme for the same bonus. Are they supposed to stack? Masterwork circumstance doesn't stack with other masterwork circumstance, but the smithy doesn't explicitly call itself masterwork. On the other hand, both really seem to be the same circumstance (better tools.)

Circumstance bonuses stack when they come from different sources.

The fancy smithy might not have better tools (at first, thus the need for masterwork purchases) but it might be bigger or have more equipment then a normal smithy, thus the bonus.

Perhaps the fancy smithy has things like water-powered bellows (no more relying on lazy apprentices who pump unevenly), Continual Light spells (no more squinting in the early morning/late evening). Things that don't affect the work as directly as masterwork tools, but that make the whole work environment more pleasant and efficient.

It seems to me that if you're gonna spend money on a stronghold and a wicked cool forge, you ought to use the magical forges from "Races of Stone". Some let you work continuously without food/water/rest, others grant +xx bonuses to certain crafting checks (Armour, weapon, etc), and another lets you ignore certain fire spells when making items that'd normally require them.

I've never had a chance to use them, but they seem right up your alley. IIRC, there's a preview of some on the site...

There is also that spell from ECS that grants a +5 on Craft checks. Definitely want an item that grants that in your forge (or any workshop, for that matter).

It sounds like the bonuses from masterwork tools, a fancy smity, and a magical forge should all stack. Go crazy and make some cool items. Or pay a level one shmuck to make weapons for minimum wage and sell them for profit. Whatever.
