Improved Speed in the Draconomicon (though it is a monstrous feat requiring the Dragon type, the Dragonblood subtype will do the job). It also boosts all other movement modes you may have and/or gain.

Speed of thought will give you a +10. (EPH)

Speed Of Thought requires you to be psionic, so you'll have to either take Wild Talent as well or a level in a psionic class (or be a psionic race, but I assume you've already chosen race).

You could also take Martial Study and Martial Stance to gain a boost and a stance which can each increase your speed.

Take the Quick (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/buildingCharacters/characterTraits.htm#quick) traid from Unearthed Arcana to gain +10 movement at the expense of 1 HP per level. As a trait, it needs to be taken at 1st level, but it doesn't count against your feats.

I don't know your race/class combo, but a single level dip into barbarian gets you +10 speed. You also get a d12 hit die, +1 BAB, +2 Fort, 4 skill points, and the ability to rage once. That may or may not work for you, but it is a pretty effective level dip.

The "quick" trait is actually -1 HP per LEVEL. Well worth mentioning, though.

Edit: "Reason: I'm an idiot" ...? Give yourself credit, I hadn't even thought of Quick. :P

Agreed. Counter the HP loss with improved toughness, and you've essentially got a +10 bonus to speed at the cost of 1 feat. Compare that to dash, wich gives +5. The downside? Improved toughness has a prerequisite of +2 base fort save. If you're not a combat class, you might have to wait a few levels to counter the HP loss.

There's also the second level of barbarian, which gives +10, and if you use a variant of ranger from Unearthed Arcana, you can get another fast movement at ranger level 2. I think they stack...
Hengeyokai from Oriental Adventures gives +10 to speed if you're the rabbit version and in your hybrid form.
Expeditious retreat. 'Nuff said.

I designed a 6th level character with a speed of 115 ft (counting spells). That's without picking out any magic items, too. I'm not sure I'd want to play him, though...

I wonder what race + class you've picked.

I was also pondering on building a "Flash" type build.

There's also the Freedom mantle in Complete Psionics. It grants a +10 unnamed bonus to speed while psionically focused. If you have that and Speed Of Thought, that's +20 to speed while focused.

In a game I ran recently, one of the players had a Shifter Ardent (the psychic class that gets mantles) and managed to put together a combination of feats and abilities that put his speed up to about 80. At 6th level. I'm going to have to ask him to remind me how he did that. I know it involved Shifter feats (from Eberron - shifters are the descendants of humans and lycanthropes).

I've always wondered how fast that is literally. I'm gonna try have a crack at it:

80 ft = 24.38 meters per 6 seconds

That's 243.8 meters per minute x 60 minutes = 14,628 meters

That's approx 15 k per hour (sorry I'm using imperial)

If you double move, that's 30k's an hour - roughly.

And if you Run at x 4 that's 60k's an hour.

Damn.. :D

Run (x4): Moving four times speed is a running pace for a character in light, medium, or no armor. It represents about 12 miles per hour for an unencumbered human, or 8 miles per hour for a human in chainmail.

Hahahaha...

Beware the bonus types on your movement. Most are enhancements or insight. Those stack with each other, but not together themselves. Example: Expeditious Retreat and Haste do not stack on the speed, they just overlap.

Yeah, something I didn't even think of before: without knowing the exact build or reason for all this speed, I guess you could consider the Run feat. It won't help you much in combat, but x5 on your movement while running will certainly increase your total speed (if that's what you're after).

Hey, sijigs, factor that into your little formula! It should get you just above 75 kmph :P

BTW, for all us using the Enlish system, 80ft per round with x5 run factors out to 45.45 mph.

Remember there's also that Wild feat in the called Cheetah's Speed (Comp Divine).. and if you play a xeph (XPH) you can also do bursts.

With Cheetah's Speed, once per hour you can move 10 x your normal speed!!

I remember building a monk on 3.0 that had crazy-mad jump skills. Doing mad dragon uppercuts up to 60 ft. Shoorryuuukkeeeennn!!!

Let's see... speed you ask...

The quick trait will get you +10 base land speed, unnamed bonus, Drawback: You gain 1 HP less per level, so at level 20 you will have about 20 HP less as you would have without this trait.

The feat Speed of thought will get you a +10 Insight bonus to speed, Downside: You have to be psionically focused. (And of course psionic)

The Dash feat gives a +5 speed, unnamed bonus, Disadvatage: You have to be light loaded and wearing light or medium armor... I think at least.

The Feral Template from Savage Species will do some other things too, but it gives a +10 unnamed bonus to speed, and if you are using UA's LA buy-off you can get rid of that LA +1 easily enough at level 3, for 4000 XP.

The Run Feat is a nice thing, but only works when running, so not that usefull in combat.

There are several classes that give you a +10 bonus to land speed, like the PRC Wildrunner, the scout, the barbarian, the monk, and maybe some others..

I once did a little searching, and amounted that you could get a 110' land speed without that much problems, using a combination of items and feats, each being quite usefull in it's own right.

And for short bursts of speed the Xeph from the Expanded Psionics handbook is a nice race. 3/day you can get a +10 bonus to your land speed for 3 rounds (Increases to +20 at 5th and +30 at 9th level), this counts as a competence bonus to speed though

My advice when trying speed... get the feral template, the quick trait, and stick with that... the others cost too much in the long run. Though if you are going psionic it might be nice to pick up Speed of thought. Though using a Xeph as a base race that is acounted for.

For example, a 6th level Xeph: 30 base land speed +10 from Feral +10 From Quick +10 From speed of thought +5 from Dash
for a total of 65' speed without too much problems, Though when required you could burst to tip it to 85 speed for 3 rounds long, 9 rounds per day in total.

It costs: 2 feats (Dash and Speed of thought), 4000XP (Buy-off cost from Feral template) +1HP/lvl (Quick)
with the run you could do 85x5 = 425' per round

If purely for the movement you could use a feat to get Martial study (sudden leap), and move half your jump check as a swift action. though the stance in there that increases your speed (Absolute steel: +10 enhancement bonus) Would require you to be level 10, unless you go warblade, swordsage or crusader, that would nudge it down to level 5.

A single level dip in the Fist of the Forest PrC from Complete Champion will net you a +10 bonus to speed that stacks with all other classes speed boosts (even if they are also enhancement bonuses) and a rage-like ability that grants a bite and boosts your unarmed damage, as well as adding Con to your AC.

And all for some RP restrictions that most Druids/Barbarians or anyone with VoP will not at all find it hard to stick to.

I'm pretty sure that there is also a backround feat that gives you +10ft. movement. I am pretty bad with campaign settings though, so I couldn't tell you whether it was Faerun or Eberron. Whichever one gives you backround feats.

Er-hem...thought this bears mentioning.

In the game I'm running, my fiancee is playing a Human Scout 10. Her base speed is 40ft. Next level that will improve to 50 ft. At level 12, I'm going to recommend her taking the Travel Devotion feat from Complete Champion. This feat allows her to move up to her speed as a swift action.

That means at level 12, once per day, for up to a minute, see can move 150 ft in one round if she so choose.

Better yet, she can move up to 50 feet, gaining her skirmish bonuses (and improved skirmish bonuses) and make a full attack. I believe she'll also be taking rapid shot as a bonus feat.

She already outdamages everyone in the party. It should be fun.

Also, Cheetah's Speed changes your base land speed to 50 ft. So that's total of 110 ft per 6 seconds!

x 10 = 1,100 ft

110 = 33.53 metres per 6 seconds

335.3 metres per minute x 60 minutes = 20,118 metres per hour

or 200 kph!

BUT you can only this burst of awesome speed once per hour. Still kicks major @r$e.

It still requires a feat, as Quick is a trait, not a flaw. Still, if you have the +2 base Fort save prereq of Improved Toughness, this is a superior use of a feat compared to Dash (I'm assuming that's what you're getting at).

And do not forget, you have to pay for it with one of your Wild Shape usages, and then it only lasts one hour, so that little trick of yours has a nasty little drawback... + Cheetah's speed 10x speed is only available as 'part of a charge' so that won't really halp if he is trying to run away. but still... might be halfway interesting.

Going cleric now for a moment.
Xeph
Base speed 30'
+10 feral (Template, Unnamed)
+10 Quick (Trait, Unnamed)

+10 Celerity domain (Domain, Unnamed)
+5 Dash (Feat, Unnamed, have to be light loaded and light or no armor)

Hmm.... at level 1 (If flaws allowed) or level 3 (Without flaws) you can have 75' land speed.... not bad for the heal bot, you can be with your allies in no time, and feral boosts you str and con so your light load will be higher as normal too, of course dark vision is always nice in caves, and the claws: Who doesn't like natural weapons?

At higher levels it could go up by taking a few levels of scout, monk, barbarian or the like....

Don't forget the Ardent with the Freedom mantle. That gives you a +10 unnamed bonus to speed while you're focused. It'll also help keep the psionic theme, since Ardent is a psionic class.

Footsteps of the Divine + DMM Persist

Expend the spell.

Profit.

Yeah, I checked the feats required... Expend spell (PHB), Divine metamagic(CD), and of course persistent spell(CA), as an added little drawback you need 7 turn rebuke attemps, (DMM asks for one turn/rebuke attempt per level increase + 1, which makes it a total of 7 turn/rebuke attemps). Though I must say, use Fharlanghn or something and you get a +50' speed boost to your land speed.

A few problems. to you need either a massive charisma (18+) or use another feat to get extra turning (PHB). So you have to use three feats, maybe four, to be able to make the spell persistent.

So, three feats and five levels of cleric are the requirements for that trick, kinda steep unless you are going cleric anyways.

Yeap, I covered this on my disclaimer toward the end. Still, covering 1,100 feet in less than 6 seconds is mighty interesting.
You didn't cover that towards the end Sijigs, you just said that you could use it once per hour.

the freedom mantle is nice too, and indeed, it works much alike the speed of thought feat, thanks for pointing that out Inkblot. Though the spells that you use have that nasty little drawback that they have a time limit on them, so I don't think he's looking for that. unless of course he goes with persistent spell, but then he needs a serious amount of feats to get it all to fit.

and on a side note: *Hugs the thread* I love this thread.... I love boosting my characters speed....

Though I must say, use Fharlanghn or something and you get a +50' speed boost to your land speed.

That's not the real profit.

The real profit is discharging the spell in a burst of speed to add +10 feet to your base speed per round remaining in the spell's duration.

The bonus only lasts for one round, but there's a lot of rounds in a day.

So, three feats and five levels of cleric are the requirements for that trick, kinda steep unless you are going cleric anyways. Choice of Clerical domains could lower that feat expenditure a bit. The Planning domain grants Extend Spell, and the Undeath domain grants Extra Turning. Playing a human Cleric you could get both Persist Spell and Divine Metamagic (Persist Spell) at 1st level, though you'd be giving up the Celerity +10' speed boost. This isn't going to lower the spell level of Footsteps of the Divine, of course.
Rahvan_Terashi

09-21-07, 11:27 AM
....spells of instantaneous duration cannot be affected by this feat, nor can spells whose effects are discharged.....

Ouch.... that spell can't be made persistent.... at least not usable with the discharging ability, so there goes that idea. aww well, still the idea was worth a thought, untill it got shot down....

and those domains are good and all, but then you could better get the celerity domain and get persistent spell at 3th level, that would keep the speed up.
