Feat for COmpensating Caster Levels? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Ok so here's the thing, I have a Walrock 8/Enlightened Spirit 2, the ES levels dont' grant me an additional caster level and it seems like every Joe and his Mama has a 25+ SR. Is there a feat that compensates caster level for these "dead" levels? I know there are similiar feats for other aspects, one comes to mind for a believe it was a druid and his animal companion if he takes non-druid levels.

Does my question make sense?

A feat shouldn't grant the equivalent of "+1 level of an existing spellcasting class."

However, if caster level is all you want, perhaps slightly retooling Practiced Spellcaster for Warlock may be what you're looking for.

That's kind of what I was thinking but a book legal feat is alot easier to get past my DM. And I reallly do just want the caster level for SR, forgoing some Invocations and the EB progression is fine(the fact that an ES doesn't provide caster levels is funked up)

Guess I'll get to work...:D

There's always spell penetration and Greater Spell Penetration, for a total +4 to beat SR, and Arcane Mastery from COmplete Arcane would let you take 10 on your caster level checks to beat SR...that should help...

Doesn't practiced spellcaster work anyways? Give me one good reason it doesn't work for warlock?

Benefit: Your caster level for the chosen spellcasting class increases by 4.

his invocations are spell-like abilities, not spells.

Characters or creatures that use spell-like abilities or invocations never learn the arcane circumlocutions of logic or mental training necessary for advanced spellcasting. As such, requirements for feats and prestige classes based on specfic levels of spells cast ("Able to cast 3rd-level arcane spells," for example) cannot be met by spell-like abilities or invocations...

I have no problems with letting it apply to Warlocks, but it is at very least arguable that it doesn't. :)

It's been pretty well established (check the FAQs and such) that Practiced Spellcaster works for Warlocks.

Oh, and get the acid invocation that bypasses SR and you're all set.

Actually, the FAQ explicitly states that practiced spellcaster does not work on warlocks...;)

Works for me (the FAQ may not be RAW, but it's close enough).

Except look up under the explanation of warlocks taking classes that increase arcane caster level, he is allowed to take it :P. Now, this may or may not include practiced spellcaster as well, but I don't see why not.

Trust me man, alot of things work for warlocks that I didn't think worked before. I lost this arguement a few weeks ago in another warlock topic, and was proven that warlock does qualify for caster level requirements etc, but cannot qualify for casting a certain level of spells, or casting a certain spell. It was all very confusing, until that thread.

As I understand it, Practised Spellcaster DOES work for Warlock, but it does not boost the number of dice for Eldritch Blast, as that is class level dependant, and not caster level dependent. (Yeah I know, a fine distinction, but...)

Anyway, a reasonable DM would probably allow it to apply to the dice as well. It's not particularly overpowered to do so.

Those prcs increase the warlock's effective lvs in spellcasting, not his effective caster lv. That is where the difference lies.

A minor technicality perhaps, but enough to make all the difference in this case.:)

I remember the thread, think I posted in it once or twice. Nice thread either way:D

The one problem that was sent to me in a message(sorry forgot your name...) was that granting +4 for spell pen was overpowered as the other feats only grant +2, I argued that I'm not freely gaining the +4 I'm just compensating for the levels that don't grant it.

Any ideas? As it stands the only reason Practiced wouldn't work is due to somantics. I see no reason it couldn't be slightly altered to comply with the needed situation.

It doesn't need to be altered at all... The only semantics going on is by the critics in this thread. Just talk to your DM, see what his stance is on it, and if he allows it, then there is no reason to bother finding ways around it.

Besides, you do know you are only going to be getting a +2 to caster level, since you only have 2 levels in that other class (but it will go up as that class goes up, to a 4 anyways).

Yes I'm well aware :D Just took my third level in said class so It's certainly worth the effort next level(12), there are probably better feats out there and as stated there is an essence that ignores SR but I'd like to get through with more then just 1 essence.

So basically Practised Spellcaster would be only useful for warlock when he's trying to get past someone's spell resistance?
