| Qwicksilver03-05-07, 10:50 PM | Hi, I've been bouncing an idea around in my head about fighters who use many attacks as opposed to one big swing. One problem hindering the two weapon fighter, or the flurrying monk, or perhaps even the quickshotting archer, is that each of their attacks is subject to damage reduction. Compare this to a similar amount of damage dealt by one major blow from a fighter who may only hit once, power attack, and miss all other times, this highlights one of the shortcomings of someone who prefers to attack more times. It has led me to the idea of a feat. It'd be called something like "bleed the same wound twice" or something like that. For the two weapon fighter it would go something like this: "If you hit with both your on and offhand weapon in the same round, this is counted as one attack for the purposes of using DR" In terms of realism, it's stretching things, but I did want to suggest it as a way to help fighters who rely on multiple hits (who aren't rogues), to not be left back when having to deal with DR. Thoughts? Comments? Silly? Good idea? |
| Ilion03-05-07, 11:06 PM | There's a feat called Two Weapon Rend in the PHB2 that addresses this slightly (though not as much as yours does): It does an additional 1d6 if you hit with both weapons. Though now that I think about it, it's kind of unclear which attack it goes on, but it does specify that it's the same damage type as your off-hand. Anyway, I like this idea. I would probably make it something like: As a full-round action you may make one attack with each of your weapons against the same foe at your normal two-weapon fighting modifiers. If both attacks hit, count the damage from both weapons as a single attack before applying DR. Prerequisites would be something like BAB +6, Two Weapon Fighting (plus the TWF prereqs). |

Fighter 1 deals 497 damage to creature with one big attack, sends parts flying everywhere. Everyone finds themselves slightly sickened at the horrible sight. Fighter 1 pats himself on the back as creature 2 hits fighter 1. Fighter 2 in the same situation deals 4 damage to creature 1, barely dropping it before turning and dealing 4 damage to creature 2 dropping it as well.) |
| kelvinaw27303-06-07, 12:44 AM | How about this: Sacrificial Strike The character foregoes multiple attacks in order to land a single, overwhelming blow. Pre-requisites: Power-attack, +10 BAB. Effect: for each five points of BAB of the characters subsequent attacks after the first, they may instead of making those attacks add +1 to hit and damage to their first and now only attack of that round as a full attack action. Hence a fighter with +10 BAB could add +1 to hit and damage. With +15 BAB this rises to +3 to hit and damage, at +20 BAB it rises again to +6 to hit and damage. Or: Surgical Strike The character foregoes additional attacks to land one highly precise and damaging blow. Pre-requisites: Weapon Finesse, more than one attack per round. Effect: For each additional attack the character would normally have, they gain +2 to hit and damage instead to their first and only attack as a full round attack action. |

BONUS DAMAGE Rogues, Rangers, and certain Fighter builds are built to deal +x damage per hit, and get as many hits per round as possible. Bonus damage MORE than compensates for needing to repeatedly suffer DR. |

| Qwicksilver03-06-07, 04:00 AM | Hmm interesting considerations, and I must note that I have read the two weapon rend feat from the phb2. I haven't used it yet, but my instinct goes with someone in another thread who commented that the damage seems a bit low to be effective. I feel that I may be wrong on this point. Illion's comment seems closest to what I was thinking about, although the tangents seem to indicate that most would rather have attacks sacrificed for one large blow. I think Illion's version sort of points more towards a person attacking with on and offhand weapons simultaneously instead of, as I imagine it normally, one two one two. As to the bonus damage comment, I'm only really aware of the rogue's extra sneak attack die and the extra damage given by favored enemy. Yes, I agree, a two weapon fighting rogue is especially effective, however this is a class feature and two weapon fighting is a style that all fighting classes should be able to use effectively. Yes, some classes take advantage of the style much better than others, but I was merely thinking aloud as to what may hamper a two weapon fighter without such things. Yes I forgot about the sense weakness feat in the Draconomicon, it always struck me as odd that such a generally applicable feat would be found in such a specific book. I do want to note though, that I recall looking for combat style feats and noting that twf has the most feats compared to other generic weapon style feats, especially in the phb2. So, perhaps twf is well taken care of already. I also wanted to note that I meant this post to apply to all high # of attack, low damage weapon styles, like flurry of blows, or a ranged archery attack. However, twf is most simple to explain, and I'd say that the monk has a lot going for it already, and archery has the advantage of distance. |
