My group has been playing together for a few months now and I am trying to figure out where my character is going.

Just as a disclaimer, my group is totally casual and we like to goof off while we play, the DM included. When we all started our group, we all desided to choose a class that is the opposite of our personality, so I chose bard because I have never used a support class in any game that I have played. I have 4 levels in bard and I took a level in sorcerer when I hit 5th level.

I guess what I am trying to figure out from you guys is what feats are good for caster classes. I looked into combat casting and some of the metamagic feats, but I don't know what to choose. Also, what are some good equipment for sorcerers to use to help in their adventures?

Also, the group is keeping everything from the players hand guide 3.5 because none of us own any of the special books.

Thanks in advance for any help that anyone gives me!

Why the level of sorcerer? What does it add? What do you plan on doing next?

One of the more valuable things would be a ring of Wizardry: since you have more than one casting class, it will double the spells-per-day of both bard and sorcerer.

That's probably a bit out of your price range at the moment. I'd have a ton of wands and scrolls if I were you. Two class lists means you can have a big toolbox of spells.

As far as feats go, I normally recommend that spontaneous casters look into metamagic, but having lost casting-levels, that might be tough to deal with. Heighten Spell is always useful if you want a quick bump to your DCs.

Say no to Combat Casting. You don’t need it and if you are that worried about failing concentration checks, Skill Focus works better.

What kind of role are you playing in the party? Who else is with you? It’s hard to give you more detailed advice.

And what spells do you know?

Hey, thanks for responding back so quickly.

My group consists of a monk, cleric, ranger and myself. The monk just joined our group, so he is only level 2, but the cleric and ranger are both level 5. I am a 4th level bard and a 1st level sorcerer. My role in the party is support with a little bit of damage input when needed.

My feats that I took for bard are Precise shot and Point Blank. I took these because I very rarely get into melee combat. I plan on going with sorcerer for the rest of my levels, mainly because we don't have an offensive spell caster in the group.

The spells I took at 1st level sorcerer are: 0 level spells - Disrupt Undead (we were fighting a lot of undead stuff), acid splash, touch of fatigue, Read Magic, and Resistance. 1st level spells - Burning Hands and Mage Armor.

I am a 4th level bard and a 1st level sorcerer. My role in the party is support with a little bit of damage input when needed. I would let the cleric handle most of the heavy buffing. Heal when it is over. You and the ranger can both use wands of CLW to back him up.

I plan on going with sorcerer for the rest of my levels, mainly because we don't have an offensive spell caster in the group. You might want to see if your DM will let you retrain those bard levels as a sorcerer. (Rules in PHBII) I know you aren't using non-core sources, but if you are looking to be the parties main arcane guy, it would seem fair.

My feats that I took for bard are Precise shot and Point Blank. I took these because I very rarely get into melee combat. As you advance as a sorcerer, consider rays and other ranged-touch spells. The advantages of these feats will apply to them as well.

The spells I took at 1st level sorcerer are: 0 level spells - Disrupt Undead (we were fighting a lot of undead stuff), acid splash, touch of fatigue, Read Magic, and Resistance. 1st level spells - Burning Hands and Mage Armor. When you are able to cast third-level spells, swap out Burning Hands. Put a nice self-buff spell, utility or something there.

Aren't the retraining rules in UA?

There may be. I was thinking of the class rebuilding options in PHBII though.

My DM did give me the option of turning all my bard levels into sorcerer, but we didn't know how to do that. Could someone explain how that works and what I would have to do as a character to accomplish that?

I don't understand a lot of the abbreviations that are being used here...I know that PhBII is players hand book 2, but I don't know what UA is. If you guys could use the words instead of abbreviations, that would be awesome.

Thanks for all the help that has been given so far!

And my sig is useful again! The Dictionary of Terms, linked in my sig shall help you. I also have various other sources link there.

And really, those rules just follow common sense. Talk it over with your DM if you don't have Unearthed Arcana, you should be able to reach a reasonable way of doing it. Like, over the next level sacrifice 1/4th of your XP to exchange a level or something. I can't actually share the real rules, for two reasons: 1) it's actually not OGL, and 2) I don't have UA anymore.
