Feat to use bow at 5ft range? [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-14-07, 10:45 AM Is there a feat that lets a character use a bow at 5ft range, effectively using it to attack opponents at melee range?

04-14-07, 11:23 AM If it's an exotic ranged weapon, take 'exotic weapon master' prestige class and then take the bonus feat from the PrC list that allows you to use it in close combat without penalty or AoO ^^

04-14-07, 12:01 PM You can shoot a bow at someone 5' from you in melee. I'm not sure whether you want to no longer provoke an AoO for firing while threatened or if you want ot use it as a melee weapon so as to threaten adjacent squares. Or do you want to fire your bow while it's 5' away from you?

Exotic Weapon Master 1
Order of the Bow Initiate
Threathen with bow (you still provoke aoo when using ranged):
Bayonets and blowblades from Complete Scoundrel

Combine these two and you'll be able to fire into melee without provoking aoo and threaten adjacent foes.

04-14-07, 12:19 PM At lower levels just make judicious use of the 5' step. Any archer who fires while threatened is either surrounded or doesn't know the rules.

04-15-07, 01:55 AM Races of the Wild also has the option of making an elvencraft bow. It's thicker, allowing it to be used as a melee weapon (it threatens regardless of how it was last used, although attacking with it ranged still provokes an AoO {all other things being equal}).

04-15-07, 01:45 PM I've never understood the desire to be able to use a bow in melee. A simple sunder or disarm from the enemy will make short work of a bow.

04-15-07, 01:51 PM Another option is the MIC is the Swordbow. Can shift from a longsword to a longbow multiple times as part of a full attack, just make sure you end on longsword and you threaten until the begining of your next turn.
