Is this on top of the feats the animal would already have, or does it start gaining them from the moment it starts advancing as a paladin's mount? For instance the heavy warhorse (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/horse.htm#warhorseHeavy) has 4HD (right?) and 2 feats: endurance and run. When would it gain a new feat? Can I take any feat for it, for instance weapon focus (hooves) or weapon focus (bite)? |
| Feyaria11-06-07, 11:23 AM | The mount will gain a new feat at 6 HD (paladin level 5), 9 HD (paladin level 11) and 12 HD (paladin level 15). Other possibilities then Weapon Focus are Improved Natural Attack, Improved Natural Armor and Multiattack (MM 305) |

| Stormbrand11-06-07, 12:27 PM | My pet favourites is Improved Grapple, because warhorses are Large and suffer no circumstance penalty for trying to grapple with hooves. Another feat from a more exotic source is 'Agent of My Wrath' (Quintessential Paladin 2) - which allows you to smite evil through your mount's natural attacks... or even better, while within 5-foot of each other (say, mounted), you can use your smite evil and BOTH of you gain the smite bonuses for an attack that round. |

A Paladin's mount is intelligent so Improved Grapple works just fine, but if you want to do that with an animal, you need to teach it a trick to use it. See the Pin trick in Random Encounters: Wild Life: Tricks and Training for D&D Animals (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031125a). I went with "Dash" and "Fleet of Foot" for my mount. The ability to make a turn during a charge is very useful. I'm going to use the substitution in the Planar Handbook to give up one use/week of cure disease in order to give my mount the Celestial Template when I next go up a level. |
| The_Shaman11-06-07, 01:11 PM | Improved Toughness could always be useful imo. If you have a flying mount (pegasi are imo well worth the wait), flyby attack is also great. Oh, multiattack, improved natural attack and, if you qualify for it, rapidstrike are great. A bear paladin mount with improved rapidstrike can be quite something. As for improved grapple for a mount, I can't help but think of this (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0200.html) |
| Fend11-06-07, 01:25 PM | Pegasi are well worth the wait i agree. Griffons are cool too tho :) Id go with feats to keep the horse alive. But The mount Grappling seems very useful aswell. Mind you though, with the Paladins honor code - youd think he wouldnt resort to something as dirty as grappling (unless ofcourse he worshiped kord - but then he really would have to be a paladin of freedom) I havent checked this up - But having a Griffon mount with Adroit Flyby attack would be devastateing. I once had my party battle a dragon with that feat, i remember it was very nasty. I cant think of a reason why a Griffon couldnt take it too - specially as a paladins mount it would be smart enough. |
