| Save-vs-DM02-23-07, 06:14 PM | Desperate Inspiration You can find inspiration in the most desperate of times. Prerequisites: Practiced inspiration, factotum level 1st. Benefit: Whenever your hit points fall below one-half your normal total, you gain an additional number of temporary inspiration points equal to your Intelligence bonus. If these temporary inspiration points are not used before your hit points rise about one-half your normal total, they are lost. Inspirational Aid You are greatly skilled at aiding your allies and lending them inspiration. Prerequisite: Cunning insight Benefit: You may spend one inspiration point as a free action to grant an ally a +2 bonus on a single attack roll, saving throw, or skill check. Inspirational Performer You have learned to blend the talents of music and esoteric knowledge into one harmonious whole. Prerequisites: Bardic music, cunning knowledge. Benefit: If you have levels in factotum and bard, those levels stack for the purposes of determining your inspiration points and the number of times per day that you can use your bardic music. This feat does not allow you bardic music abilities beyond what your class levels would normally allow. Inspired Mind You understand the very basics of psionic thought and potential. Prerequisites: Wis 13, factotum level 1st. Benefit: You may treat your inspiration points as power points for the purposes of qualifying for and using psionic feats. Greater Jack of All Trades You have a knack for using most skills with some degree of skill. Prerequisites: Int 13, Improved jack of all trades Benefit: When using a skill that you possess no ranks in, you gain a +2 bonus on that skill check. This bonus replaces the bonus granted by Improved Jack of All Trades. Improved Jack of All Trades You have managed to master the basics of most skills. Prerequisites: Int 13, jack of all trades Benefit: When using a skill that you possess no ranks in, you gain a +1 bonus on that skill check. Practiced Inspiration You possess more inspiration points than normal. Prerequisites: Int 13, factotum level 1st. Benefit: You gain 1 additional inspiration point, which can be spent normally. Sudden Inspiration You can recover your inspiration points with a round of concentration. Prerequisites: Concentration 7 ranks, practiced inspiration Benefit: You can recover your spent inspiration points by taking a full-round action that provokes attacks of opportunity and by succeeding on a DC 20 Concentration check. | Save-vs-DM02-25-07, 03:20 PM | The lack of comments must mean either A. These feats are balanced. B. These feats are rather uninteresting. C. Both of the above. No comments at all? Cheers, Save vs DM |
| celloshane02-25-07, 09:05 PM | What the heck is a Factotum and a Inspiration Point? |
| MaverickWolf02-25-07, 11:36 PM | Factotum is the new core class introduced in Dungeonscape, and inspiration points are what they rely on for their abilities. I don't know much more than that though. |
| NoldorForce02-25-07, 11:39 PM | The latter is a mechanic used by the former, which is the single base class presented in Dungeonscape. Basically, at the start of each encounter, the Factotum (I'd have preferred Polymath myself) gets a certain low quantity of inspiration points which are used to fuel class abilities. Complaints about the class include: -The fact that you never get very many inspiration points, maxing out at 10. -Some of the better effects require more inspiration points than just one; the effects that you spend one point (singular rolls) on diminish in value at higher levels. -Unlike the Tome of Battle system, there's no way to refresh your inspiration points. When you run out (which is likely to be quickly if you're not miserly), your effectiveness diminishes like a psion/wilder without power points. Note: I don't have the book myself, but have skimmed it and heard much discussion on it from others. |
| okaynowa02-26-07, 04:32 PM | Hey, Save-vs-DM-- this is pretty creative stuff. I'm a fan of the class, and love to see new options for it. Some observations: Desperate Inspiration: The trigger for this seems a little easy. Maybe one-third hit points? I understand that it will help factotums most at low levels when they need it, but "under half" still seems a little frequent. Inspirational Performer: This feat establishes a nice connection between the two classes. A factotum-bard would make for a pretty skill-crazy character. Inspired Mind: I really like this feat-- it'd be great for a Sarlonan character (in the Eberron setting). This feat also inspires me to make a variant factotum that gets Psychic Dilettante instead of Arcane Dilettante. I wonder if something similar could be done for incarnum? Sudden Inspiration: Kind of like a refresh maneuver for martial adepts, eh? I'm wary at first, but the loss of a round is a big trade-off, and the recovery of points won't matter for those class features that can only be used once a day. Given its similarity to martial adept refreshes, perhaps there's a way to houserule it into the basic mechanics of the Inspiration Pool? Factotum love! |
| Save-vs-DM02-28-07, 10:31 PM | Good comments. And yeah, the Factotum is a new class. I figured that a refresh mechanic wasn't a bad thing, as they pretty much have daily limits on just about everything already. Cheers, Save vs DM |
| okaynowa02-28-07, 10:48 PM | Important note discovered on the EN Worlds forum: Assume that the factotum regains his inspiration points with five minutes of rest. Man, that's an annoying oversight. The funny thing is that some of his abilities, like the skill bonus, have restrictions precisely so they work fine outside of combat. I'll pass a note along to customer service. Sorry guys! __________________ Mike Mearls - Developer, RPG R&D Wizards of the Coast - http://www.wizards.com Retro Stupid and proud of it. So, the refresh rate was intended to be fairly liberal. I like Save's Sudden Inspiration feat, but I get a sort of "Natural Spell" vibe from it-- how could a factotum not take such a feat? Inspirational Aid-- should the bonus provided be equal to the factotum's Int bonus? That might set it apart a bit from the flanking bonus/aid another mechanic. A feat and an inspiration point are pretty costly things for a factotum-- I'd want my money's worth, if I'm going to spend it on somebody else. |
