What do people think about feats which reduce the amount of stats a character needs? As in, feats which replace using one stat with another.

A character only gets so many feats which could be put towards this goal. If we assume that it is necessary to use the hd gained feats, instead of bonus feats from classes, how much would be too much? If there was a 6 feat stacking combo that replaced everything that called for one stat with a different stat, effectively making the character only really need a single stat, would that be too powerful? How about a few feats which replaced several things with a single stat?

Just looking to see what people think about this type of scenario. What problems do you see, or do you feel that it would be ok?

These have the vast ability to be, if not broken, more powerful than other abilities. That's not to say there aren't a lot of them already; though they usually don't take feat form. (See the "x stat to y bonus" thread).

My biggest concern is that such feats become designed to allow cherrypicking, which to a limited degree is okay. For instance a hypothetical feat that allows a Wizard to get bonus spell from Charisma rather than Intellegence. If anything that feat probably hurts the character in question, but can make for nice concept and may be mechanically effective.

But these hypothetical feats will almost always go too far. Allowing anyone to get their Wisdom bonus to all Dexterity related things is such an example.

So to answer your question; almost anything would be going "too far", with limited exceptions. There are other ways to cope with MAD.

(note: I'm pulling the numbers out of thin air, I might be completely wrong. This is just speculation.)
Let's say you put those 6 feats to use and now you've got 70% of you ability based rolls on one ability. If you put a +6 enhancement on it, and your best ability score, the modifier might be 6 higher than some of those rolls used to be. That's quite good, but 30% of your rolls would have been on you best score anyway, so there, there is only a +2 or so higher. This is still better than using all those feats for direct bonuses to rolls. You'd probably only get have to improvement on that 40%. Not unbalancing, though.
I think a major problem occurs if this build is combined with exotic races. The balancing factor of "bonus on one stat, penalty on the other" doesn't quite work when you redirect most rolls to one stat, and there are probably some races with a large range in racial modifiers.

x stat to y bonus (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=320889)

i guess my input would be that it seems like its possible to get alot of things from alot of abilities, as evident in the thread. i would like some sort of feat system that cleans this all up, so im not even tempted to take classes that greatly increase my effectiveness but take away from who/what i want my character to be.
