Fey Legacy - Why confusion and summon nature's ally V? [Archive] - Wizards Community

In Complete Mage, there's a feat called Fey Legacy. It lets a person cast confusion, dimension door, and summon nature's ally V once per day with a caster level equal to your character level.

I looked through all four Monster Manual's and found that there are two fey types that have dimension door. But there are none that have confusion or summon nature's ally V. So why are they in this feat?

Also, would it be feasible to take out confusion and put in greater invisibility since there are two fey who can do it (Sirine and Pixie)?

No, it wouldn't be reasonable, since it's a much more powerful spell.
Basically, Confusion fits the Fey theme, and isn't all too UBER.

The feat gives you a deeper connection to the plane of Faerie, thus SNA.

How can confusion fit the "fey theme" if no fey in any monster manual can use it as a spell-like or supernatural ability but there are two fey who can use greater invisibility?

The half-fey template from fiend folio does grant confusion as a SLA though.
I think it is there for the whole fey - enchantment theme.:)

First, you're ignoring the second part of CantrpN's argument: Greater Invisibility is too powerful. So, regardless of how many Fey have it, it shouldn't be in the feat. If you disagree with that analysis, fair enough, but I don't disagree with it.

Second, though, I agree that if no fey creatures use something as a spell-like/supernatural ability, then it shouldn't be part of the legacy. However, citing only two fey creatures that have a particular SLA/SA doesn't seem like a strong argument. Off the top of my head (manuals not in from of me), I think that there are several fey that use Charm Person. If Charm Person is in another Fey heritage feat, then it can't go in Fey Legacy, but other mind compulsion effects would -- even if there isn't a single fey that uses it. Does Confusion fit that description? If so, then it makes sense.

Summon Nature's Ally V seems very much out of place.

I don't quite agree the feat has to mimic fey, actually...
I'd like it as much thematically if it were to grant Translocation Trick, Unluck, Mind Fog, Sirine's Grace, Modify Memory or Song of Discord. None of those are things ordinary fey gets, but they fit the theme. Of course, said spells are quite a bit more powerful, but that's beside the point...

While no fey may have confusion as a spell-like or supernatural ability, from what I can tell, most fey have bard or druid as a favored class, and/or have inherent spellcasting ability equal to that of a bard or druid of certain level. With that in mind, practically any bard or druid spell might be considered appropriate as a spell-like ability granted by a fey heritage feat.

After having looked at the "Typical Spells" for a Nymph i saw little problem with the SLA's associate to those feats, though truthfullyI rarely use them...

Well, I agree that confusion just fits the fey theme without being a powerful spell.

Summon monster V? you can summon a satyr(with pipes, 1d4+1 without) or Nixie with it. (or 1d3 unicorns, but that's just 5d8+20hp of healing to a companion per unicorn, and 80 minutes of poison immunity per unicorn.

I don't agree; Confusion is inappropriate for fey and another reason why is that it potentially harms the caster, environment, or other fey. Seems against fey way of life. Something immobilizing, poisoning, debilitating, or controlling seems more apt, and Confusion is not it.. more like a demonic power.
Greater Invisibility is too powerful (for just anyone to grab, outside of fey, primary casters, devils, etc) so knock it down to Invisibility and at least they can't do (much) harm with it. There's so many ways around Invisibility that it's not even funny, although some are like the hideously underrated Glitterdust.. which, speaking of, makes a great fey spell.
Throw in a Cure spell, or other restorative, or something to do with travel like Expiditious Retreat.

Fey, enchantment spells seem to fit the whole fey theme quite well, and the pixie does get lesser confusion as a SLA. I say just stick with it.:)
