Hey all,

I have a question...
Does a rogue know what type of trap a trap is when they make their search check to find it, or only that a trap is there.
Would they know a magical trap not being able to cast the required spells?
Also, does detect magic reveal magical traps?

thanks for anyone who responds...

Detect magic reveals magic traps, unless, of course, Nystall's Magic Aura has been cast on the trap.

That's more like three questions.

1. Finding a magic trap has a DC of 25 + the level of the spell used to create it. So yes if they beat the trap's search DC they will instantly know that it's a magical trap.
2. The answer is the same as first part of the question.
3. Detect magic requires three rounds of concentration to determine the source of the magical aura, but yes it could potentially find magical traps. Though any rogue worth his salt in trapfinding (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/rogue.htm#trapfinding) will know that the trap is magical when they find it and have a few spell scrolls available to combat en-spelled traps.

Read the rogue's trapfinding (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/rogue.htm#trapfinding) ability for more information.

Oh I didnt mean if they would know its a magical trap, I figure they would know that, I wondered if they would know what the type of trap is itself...for instance a Fireball trap, or an Acid Cloud trap...instead of just knowing that it is a magical trap...

The answer's in the Rogue's trapfinding class ability:Trapfinding

Rogues (and only rogues) can use the Search skill to locate traps when the task has a Difficulty Class higher than 20.

Rogues (and only rogues) can use the Disable Device skill to disarm magic traps. A magic trap generally has a DC of 25 + the level of the spell used to create it.

A rogue who beats a trap’s DC by 10 or more with a Disable Device check can study a trap, figure out how it works, and bypass it (with her party) without disarming it. So the Rogue would need to first find the trap using Search, then make at least 35 + spell level on their Disable Device check to know how the magical trap works, i.e., what spell was used.

Ok cool, that answers that...
Now...
If for say there is a Fireball trap, it uses an alarm spell as the trigger, a 20'radius area. Does the Rogue need to make it to the square that the trap is placed on (The center), or any adjacent square to the area of the alarm trigger?
For instance having a wizard use Dispel Magic to render the trap innate for 1d4 rounds so the Rogue can actually get to the trap...

If for say there is a Fireball trap, it uses an alarm spell as the trigger, a 20'radius area. Does the Rogue need to make it to the square that the trap is placed on (The center), or any adjacent square to the area of the alarm trigger? The Rogue only needs to make it close enough to perform the Search check:Search (Int)

Check: You generally must be within 10 feet of the object or surface to be searched. Note the word "generally" above.Spyglass

Objects viewed through a spyglass are magnified to twice their size Another way to interpret the spyglass is that the distance is effectively halved. Thus the Rogue can Search, using a spyglass, from 20' away -- just outside the trigger radius of the magical trap.

The Rogue needs decent INT to get enough skill points to do the job. The player needs Intelligence to do a decent job of playing a skillful Rogue.

Having a wizard use Dispel Magic to render the trap inert is OK, but the clever Rogue doesn't actually need the help.
