so i got to wondering about grappling and a few things stood out in my mind. lets say you have character A who starts a grapple against character B. A rolls to start and is "resisted" by B and thusly fails landing B in a grapple controlled by A. at this point A pins B in another contested roll where B resists and on his 3rd attack A deccides to deal damage.

attack 1 - A wins grapple
attack 2 - A pins B
attack 3 - A knees B with his spiked kneepads

then it comes to B's turn and he decideds life sucks and wants out so he rolls his grapple chack and is "resisted" by B.

then its around to A again and we see the damage flying

my question is where i "qouted" the word resist. many new abilities have come up in this sector and i was wondering how these instances are worked. according to what i have read its worded like i said , but whats everyone elses take?

You have it pretty much right. Except on B's turn, when he tries to escape, he is "resisted" by A of course, not B as you have written.

Here "resisting" just means making an opposed grapple check, which is what people usually call it.

oops , yeah sorry aobut that mistype.

thanks , the reason i was asking is that in the PHB2 there is 2 feats that add massively to resist grapple (one is in combat focus and the other is a shield feat). i jsut think its funny that these allow you to maintain a grapple easier.

Combat stability gives a bonus on grapple attempts made against you. In other words, only when you are "resisting" a grapple, not instigating one. So if you are grappling someone and he tries to escape, you don't get the bonus.

Shield ward works exactly the same way.

Now that I see what you're getting at, I would be more specific. "Resisting" as you're using it refers to making a grapple check when it is not your turn.

Edit- Is your point that these feats don't do anything to help you escape a grapple once you're in one? That is true, but seems reasonable giving the flavor of the feats. (Being stable doesn't help you escape, and neither does having a big shield in the way.)

Edit 2- Bah, I see your point now. When someone tries to escape a grapple you started, you get to resist their check, and the bonuses here apply. And you're right, that doesn't make much sense. You could pretty easily interpret grapple checks made to escape a grapple as not being "against" you, if it is a problem.
