is there any way to gain a familiar without being wizard/sorceror? If a familiar is magically linked to it's master, couldn't a similar effect be used by a wizard to link a different person to an animal?

There's a feat Obtain Familar in Complete Arcane.

There's a feat Obtain Familar in Complete Arcane.

But you still have to be a spell caster or at least have a caster level. It is so that warlocks and bards and other arcane classes can have a familiar if they want one. An assassin with a viper familiar is a nice touch. But none for the straight rogue or fighter or even cleric.

Try Handle animal. Its a good skill to use and it works. You can always enhance a normal animal with magic.

1 grab a ring of spell storing
2. have a druid load up animal friendship(you cast from ring)
3. headband of intellect on animal
4. (i can't find what i am looking for but it was something to do with speak with animals)

your quasi familiar won't get much better but ya still got one kinda

There a few prestige classes that grant a familiar, even for a non-arcane character.

1. Celebrant of Sharess in the Player's Guide to Faerun, and any class can get it with the right alignment, feats, and skills. Thing is, the class is campaign-specific and your familiar is always a cat.

2. The Mystic Wanderer in Magic of Faerun is designed for divine spellcasters that want a witch flavor to their character. You get a familiar nonetheless, and it can work in any campaign.

3. Arachne from Faiths and Pantheons is a drow-only class, and you get a spider familiar and mount. I doubt you are a drow matron mother, however.

The Demonologist and Nar Demonbinder grant you a familiar, but they are for arcane spellcasters.

That's 3.0, and any sane DM would not keep the old animal friendship spell in a 3.5 campaign.

If your willing to go out of wizards stuff look up the book called "Familiars" by trollords its got rules for familars for ever class as well as special mounts and animal companions for all classes. This book is very powerful though so beware if you go to nuts with it your GM might just laugh at you then say heck no.
