I'm currently playing an Elf, working through various classes on the way to the PrC Dervish. The other members of my group all have Darkvision (2 dwarves, and a warlock with the "See the Unseen" invocation).
Seeing as we're progressing through a vast dungeon complex, quite possibly in the dark for most of his adventuring career, is there any way he can "develop" darkvision? Doing so from equipment will be next to impossible, as we don't have any chance of getting out to a friendly magic-item saleman in the near future.
As it stands, i'm ruining things for the rest of my group by having a nice, blatently obvious torch waving about, declaring our presence to anyone in LoS...

Any help appreciated.

Equiptment is the prime way.

Spells are 2ndary, because they have a duration.

Templates will do it, as will a species change of some kind.

But while many feats increase existing darkvision, they are all quite clear that they do nothing if you don't already have darkvision. This leads to the rather obvious statement that the game designers do not consider it reasonable to let you get Darkvision from a mere feat.

Also, you might try using the spell Dancing Lights. At least the light is out in front of you instead of near you.

What classes do you currently have, and what books do you have access to?

If you've taken two levels of ranger for the free TWF, take a third for Endurance, then take a level of the Horizon Walker (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/horizonWalker.html) prestige class. (assuming you can scrape together 8 ranks in knowledge (geography) Take underground terrain mastery for darkvision.

The shadowdancer (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/shadowdancer.html) prerequisites have a fair amount of overlap with those of the dervish, if you can stand to lose a point of base attack bonus. Two levels of shadowdancer willl get you darkvision and other benefits.

Thanks guys - i didn't really think it would be that easy, as i couldn't remember coming across a feat for Darkvision. Was worth asking though, as there's a lot of stuff out there i'm not amazingly familiar with.

Barring equipment, the best choice i can come up with is to do a 1-level dip into warlock, just to pick up the "see the unseen" invocation - 60ft darkvision and see invisibility. However, that'd be about the only good thing from Warlock - no BAB is a major downside of doing this, as it'd mean no Dervish till one level later than i wanted.

What class and level are you? if you take a dip into warlock you could end up with the 20% penalty for uneven levels for multiclassing unless your DM has house ruled that warlock is a favored class for elves.

There is the Otherworldly feat in PGF. It grants Darkvision 60', amongst other things. Elf-only, but that works fine for the OP.

It's a Regional feat, though, so your DM has to allow it.

I think there is an abyssmal heritor feat in fiendish codex which grants darkvision, IIRC.:)

The other catch is 1st-level only.

The other catch is 1st-level only.

True - but that can be worked out with the DM as a houseruled "its effects didn't surface until later".

The DM would already have to waive the Regional requirement, so if they're going to allow it anyway, it's not as big of a deal to waive the 1st-level only requirement also.

Lords of Madness
Abberation blood (prereq feat + a skill bonus)
for Inhuman Vision (Darkvision and spot bonus)
the darkvision starts out pathetically limited, but is designed to scale on the number of abberation-feats you take.
