| cacheek05-09-07, 06:30 PM | I'm looking to create a wildplains rider, airborne though. What kind of creatures do you guys use for flying mounts? Any preference? If so, why? |
| Loki565405-09-07, 06:46 PM | First thing that popped into my head. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/hippogriff.htm) |

| MageWeasel05-10-07, 09:21 AM | While not as cool as the above mentioned suggestion, I've had some moderate success with Dire Bats. |
| Darth Sephiroth05-10-07, 10:25 AM | Wyvern, take a few of the Draconomicon feats, perhaps add levels in Dragonrider and you'll be pretty darn nasty to anything trying to harm you |
| Bacon and Eggs05-10-07, 10:40 AM | Really oversized insects... Dragon Fly... Moth... Butterfly... I'd prefer these because they knock out some of the testosterone when some riders think that they are too cool. |

I'd prefer these because they knock out some of the testosterone when some riders think that they are too cool. Dragonflies are rather cool. And there are already bug riders (See things like the spider eater) |
| Kursk05-10-07, 02:47 PM | I'm looking to create a wildplains rider, airborne though. What kind of creatures do you guys use for flying mounts? Any preference? If so, why? Bats. No problem flying at night or in the pitch black of a dungeon. |
| kjenks05-10-07, 03:13 PM | Dire bat animal companions are nice because they advance (slowly), giving you the opportunity to add feats and skills. The Hover feat is great. But my favorite aerial combat mounts are magical: (1) Phantom Stag or Phantom Steed spells at a high enough caster level to fly, or (2) Figurine of Wondrous Power: Ebony Fly. The other Figurines are nice, but the Ebony Fly (as a hippogriff) has Wingover, which helps set up charge attacks for the next round. The Figurine will die fast and often, but it just turns into a tiny statue between your knees and you can get it going again the next round. |
| Orange20SiderOfDeath05-10-07, 04:10 PM | Personal favorite are Nightmares, if they let you of course...lol, also, dragon cohort its a sweet feat, would have to be high level though. |
| Werebat05-10-07, 04:39 PM | Sky Bleeder. Or, if you're going for real druid cheese, Winged Fleshraker. - Ron ^*^ |
| Fireclave05-10-07, 05:01 PM | The first aerial mounts that come to mind are Giant Owls and Giant Eagles. I'd rather go with the giant owls because I prefer stealth over speed. Giant owls get superior lowlight vision, very good senses, and are very silent in flight. Not to mention the versatility you get out of having an intelligent mount (Leadership + Giant Owl cohort + class levels = :ayyyy!: ). |
| Grizzled Gryphon05-10-07, 05:11 PM | The Drakkensteed is awesome. They are in Dragon Magic. But, I think that the Gryphon is a better mount. Effective in combat, to boot. Pegasus isn't a bad choice, either. Yeah, it is just a horse with wings, but it is still nice. Another option, if you can do it, is to take a large (or larger) creature, and add on the winged template from Savage Species. Yeah, Savage Species is 3.0, but that template translates over just fine. With that template, you have a LOT of options open to you. |
| NecroticBanana03-23-08, 03:54 AM | What the heck is a sky bleeder? |
| Johnathan_Vagabond03-24-08, 08:50 AM | You could also go real old school with a pegasus. If you get the chance, striking up a deal with a griffin might work too. |
| sblaxman03-24-08, 11:11 AM | I'm a old schooler, first two things in my head were pegasus and eagle. Once DMed a Paly w/ a black pegasus.... that was a fun campaign |
| Krusk03-24-08, 11:12 AM | Do you have access to arms and equipment guide? If so, I am thinking soarwhale. Easily affordable, and totally awsome. (10k to buy the young, and 500 to pay someone to train it) |
| StruckingFuggle03-24-08, 05:47 PM | Or, if you're going for real druid cheese, Winged Fleshraker. You, sir, are EVIL. And also, that idea is stolen, now, for my "Four Horsemen" of evil npcs with awful mounts (still need #2 .. the lineup so far is a Half Fiend Pyrohydra, a Phrenic Nightmare, and now a Winged Fleshraker) ... thank you. :) If so, I am thinking soarwhale. Easily affordable, and totally awsome. Haha... Awesome. Impractical, but awesome... |
| Zodiaq703-24-08, 09:28 PM | They can't fly for long, but I've always had a soft spot for the Dragonne. :) |
| StevenO03-25-08, 12:52 AM | I think the three classic mounts are the Griffon, Hippogrif, and Pegasus. |
