| lowendz11301-03-08, 10:04 PM | As crazy as it is, yes. You could wield a ...yuck...huge weapon. |
| Ace_of_time01-03-08, 10:08 PM | Monkey grip works off of what you actual size is not what size you are considered to be. Sorry. |
| GodFood01-03-08, 10:45 PM | Less than 3 days! wtf? As crazy as it is, yes. You could wield a ...yuck...huge weapon. This is what I was hoping for, Monkey grip works off of what you actual size is not what size you are considered to be. Sorry. But after Re-Reading the feat with this in mind. I do believe that Ace of Time is correct. Thanks guys :) |
| DarkRhystar01-03-08, 10:57 PM | wtf? If you go to the second page of this forum, you will find another thread on the exact question you just asked. Your question is asked at least once a week... ...despite it being asked once a week. ...despite it being answered in the first post of the FAQ at the top of this board. Can I combine Monkey Grip and Powerful Build? Do they stack? No. Powerful build says that it treats the character as being one size category larger in many ways. And then it lists them: - he is treated as one size larger, if doing so is advantageous to him, when he is subject to a size modifier or special size modifier for an opposed check. - he is considered to be one size larger when determining whether a creature’s special attacks based on size can affect him. Now, he is not treated as one size larger for the purpose of wielding weapons. Rather, he can wield weapons designed for a creature one size larger without penalty. Monkey Grip(MG) would give him the same advantage, but with a -2 penalty. Monkey Grip(MG) allows you to use a weapon of larger size than yours without changing the effort you need to wield it, but with a -2 penalty to attack rolls. The Half-Giant and the Goliath, being Medium creatures, would be allowed to use weapons designed for Large creatures with a -2 penalty, penalty that they can avoid simply using their Powerful Build ability. ...despite this forum now having a search feature. No matter how easy it is to find the answer or how often the question gets asked, someone always asks it again. It truly is an endless cycle. |
| GodFood01-04-08, 01:30 AM | I don't see why my asking a question warrants such a negative attitude from you, but I guess to each their own. If you want to dump on someone because you're annoyed I cant really stop you. |

If you want to dump on someone because you're annoyed I cant really stop you.I don't think he's annoyed so much at you, as everyone that does what you just did (including you right now). It is a common forum "courtesy" to look over available FAQs and attempt to use the search function. Seeing as how this question is asked on every page, it is considered "common forum knowledge," |
| drunkman01-04-08, 10:24 AM | Why didn't I think of that when I got my copy of Races of Stone?.... Goliath + Monkey Grip = Big frickin huge greatsword on your head. Seems crazy, but hey, neither ability tells them you necessarily can't stack them, and I think abilities that involve size increases stack, so as long as they don't say they don't stack, you can stack them. I still think you can do it despite what the FAQ says. What the FAQ misses is that -The benefits of this racial trait stack with other effects of powers, abilities, and spells that change the subject's size catagory |

| ravenshrike01-04-08, 02:04 PM | The answer is yes, but only if you have the mountain rage barbarian substitution ability. And then only when you're raging. |
| Ace_of_time01-04-08, 09:08 PM | wtf? This is what I was hoping for, But after Re-Reading the feat with this in mind. I do believe that Ace of Time is correct. Thanks guys :)No problem. |

I still think you can do it despite what the FAQ says. What the FAQ misses is thatPowerfull and monkeygrip don't change your size. And monkey grip says it is based off the creature actual size not what size they are considered. No they don't stack. Not because they do the same thing but because monkey grip only count what size the creature is. |
| Ace_of_time01-04-08, 09:18 PM | The answer is yes, but only if you have the mountain rage barbarian substitution ability. And then only when you're raging. What book is that from? Please? Never heard of it. |
| Rymosrac01-05-08, 10:51 AM | That's out of Races of Stone as well. It makes you lose powerful build and gain REAL large size while raging. Therefore, it would then stack with monkey grip, allowing you to wield a huge weapon while raging. I've never gotten the obsession with bigger weapons. There are so many better, easier ways to beef up melee damage output. |
| Dheran01-05-08, 06:05 PM | I've never gotten the obsession with bigger weapons. There are so many better, easier ways to beef up melee damage output. I don't get it, either. Look at the ballista: it's just a huge size heavy crossbow. A medium size character can shoot it with a -4 size penalty. Nobody uses a ballista, though there aren't nearly as many ways to beef up missile damage output. |

Powerful build work because it lets him/her use large weapons as med creature. I don't think a temp increase will be enough. I think that might fall on DM call list. |

I think that might fall on DM call list.Let's say your character is a goliath barbarian with the mountain rage substitution, and you take Monkey Grip as your first feat. Okay, great, Complete Warrior says that with your spiffy feat you (who are Medium sized) "can wield melee weapons one size category larger than you are...". You can swing a Large greatsword, dealing 3d6 damage, yay! CW goes on to add "...with a -2 penalty on the attack roll," so keep that in mind. Ah, but now the barbarian decides to use his mountain rage! Races of Stone says "when he rages, his size category increases to Large... However, he does not gain additional benefits on weapon size and grapple checks, since he already has them from his powerful build ability." The only mention in RoS of what weapon size benefits powerful build gives is in the goliath physical description section: "A goliath can use weapons designed for a creature one size larger without penalty." Okay, so we know now that powerful build doesn't stack with the barbarian's new Large size while mountain raging. Okay, fine, but he has Monkey Grip! The only qualifier in Monkey Grip is your size category. You're Large now, so Monkey Grip means you can wield a Huge weapon! You could only wield a Large weapon before, because Monkey Grip and powerful build both compare the size of weapon you can wield to your size category, and you were Medium. Now you're Large, so you can wield Huge weapons! Get it now, Ace? I hope I've helped. |
| Cartigan01-06-08, 09:53 AM | I don't see where it says powerful build doesn't work with mountain rage. It says he doesn't get any extra benefits of being large because he already has them, it doesn't say that powerful build doesn't extend to his large form. The skill even says the effects stack with powers, abilities, and spells that change the character's size. When raging, he is large, but powerful build would mean he can be treated as huge - with no penalty. And you still couldn't use Monkey Grip. |
