I've always liked this feat for a number of reasons.

1. It doesn't make you feel like you're being nerfed. It gives you a set of abilities related to the feat that are interesting and related to the feat's concept, and also has a drawback in that you're, all of a sudden, projecting an aura of good (and now any evil cleric with a detect good spell can sense it)
2. It isn't based on abstract training that may or may not actually take place in the game- it opens the door to roleplay, and, in some DM's eyes, forces your character to keep up this "intimate relationship" with the fey, despite the fact you're spending your time adventuring. Just why did you leave home, anyway?
3. It makes life more interesting for a DM who's low on ideas- get the bad guy to steal your girl/boyfriend, and all of a sudden you're high-tailing it to save her/him.

I can't help but feel that 4th edition would be infinitely better with more feats like this. When all feats are based on abstract training, it's all too easy to assume that this stuff gets completed without actually role-playing it and... well, "disrupting" the adventure with a boring aside that involves burly men lifting weights or hitting targets. Am I the only one who feels this way?

I could be jaded after my month of playing in a god-awful "powergaming" game where a psion who could make anything within 100 feet kill itself took all the glory and spotlight. For example, the last fight I participated in there were about 8 death giants (MM3). His turn came around, and by the end of it there was only one left.

Also, when you do the math and see skill focus gives a paltry +15% chance to succeed or fail on a skill check- there are 36 skills!- and you usually only get feats once every three levels unless you're a fighter- who wants to take it when you could be taking something like Two Weapon Fighting and gaining a whole extra attack?

Its little design decisions like these that really hit home with me and guide my choices for a roleplaying game, and I'm almost frightened to see 4th edition come out and make more groups like the one that jaded me. Say it ain't so? :P
