The real reason people suggest it for scouts is that unlike Manyshot, precision damage applies to each arrow, even if they're aimed at the same or different people.

This does, however, prevent you from using the Manyshot Glitch -- for instance, cast True Strike (or use Fell Shot or similar make-one-attack-do-nasty-**** effect) and fire. With Manyshot, you use multiple arrows on one attack roll, which works with those tricks. With Greater Manyshot, you cannot, since you're making multiple attack rolls and True Strike/Fell Shot only affect one attack roll.
