| Lokenarin05-18-07, 03:17 PM | :weep: what is the consensus about the greenbound summoning feat? My player is creating a gestlat druid/rogue or a druid/fighter. the party is starting at level 6/6 and he wants to take that feat. Is it borken or ok? If it is broken, what would it take to fix it? |
| Vegepygmy05-18-07, 03:58 PM | The consensus is that it's broken. I do not concur with the consensus, however. One of the major reasons people think GS is broken are the spell-like abilities the template grants. If you keep in mind that the greenbound creatures you can summon are too stupid to use them in any effective way, however, it goes a long way toward "unbreaking" the feat. The other objection is usually that GS is way better than Augment Summoning. That's entirely true, but (IMO) Augment Summoning sucks, and sucks especially hard when you consider that you have to take Spell Focus (Conjuration) first, which is a really craptacular feat. |
| wonlee7605-18-07, 04:46 PM | Well, the author of the feat once posted that it was presented as a +2 slot metamagic feat. Through the wonderful editing process at WOTC, it ends up being what it is today. |
| TheCobra05-18-07, 05:26 PM | and sucks especially hard when you consider that you have to take Spell Focus (Conjuration) first, which is a really craptacular feat. Only if you're playing just Core. With the Spell Compendium, there are plenty of powerful conjuration spells that allow saving throws. |
| Empiro05-18-07, 05:35 PM | Agree with #3 above. The feat was supposed to be a metamagic feat with +2 to levels. When I first say the feat (and hadn't read the post by the designer), I was thinking it was a mistake too, given how overpowered it was as-written. |
| Lokenarin05-18-07, 06:36 PM | My problem is that even if the feat made the caster use it at a +2 level spell, ie. a 1st level summon nature's ally to make it a 3rd level spell slot...the greenbound animal summoned would still defeat a regular 3rd level summon nature's ally animal. that does not seem right |
| Lokenarin05-18-07, 06:46 PM | lets show what being greenbound does to summoned natures ally... The feat applies the greenbound template to any animal you summon with any Summon Natures Ally spell. The greenbound template:- Type becomes plant (so no crits, mind affecting, or polymorphing..) NA improves by 6 Gains a slam attack (Sp) at will - entangle, pass without trace, speak with plants. 1/day - wall of thorns DR 10/magic and slashing Fast healing 3 +4 grapple bonus Resistance to electricity and cold 10 Tremorsense 60' Str +6, Dex +2, Con +4, Cha+4 +16 to hide and move silently in forested areas (CR +2, LA+8) The feat is on page 8, the Greenbound template on page 173-175 Now apply that to any natures ally. immagine that 6th level druid summoning mass greenbound ally's. no normal encounters would be able to defeat your ally's. Now if the power of the feat lessen's as you go up in levels? If so what level would a druid have to be in order to balance out the feat with the normal encounters that you should be fighting. The feat is way overbalanced at low levels. what about at higher levels. I am thinking about putting a minimum level on this feat and making it a chain feat that goes along with augment summoning. As well as making it a cost of +2 spell slots. |
