| Morray08-22-07, 12:02 PM | The heal skill gives info on helping a character save against a disease, but there is nothing that mentions if one can determine if a character has contracted a disease. I have two characters who have been bitten by dire rats and failed their saves. In the next couple of days they will feel the affects. Because they know they've been bitten, I'm just trying to get a heads up on when the cleric states he's gonna use a heal check to verify if they have contracted the disease but have no DC's for it. |
| tarkin08-22-07, 01:35 PM | I would rule that a Long Term care Heal check, (DC = 15) would be enough to identify a disease. This is a house rule, but how I would play. |
| Dazzer08-22-07, 01:54 PM | The DC to treat the Disease is equal to the diseases save DC. So, the DC to identify a disease before it effects a character; in my opinion, would also be equal to the save DC. One the disease has had at least 1 successful bout (aka it has dealt damage to an effected character). The DC becomes automatic success to realize the character is diseased; but to treat him, is the above DC. That's how I run it. Also, it makes the Pit Fiends disease worth while XD |
| Tedronai08-22-07, 02:14 PM | The DC to identify a disease should, logically, be at least slightly lower than the DC to treat it. And the DC to identify that a subject IS diseased should, logically, be even lower than that. I would suggest at least 2 points lower for identifying the disease than for treating it, and at least 5 points lower to discover that someone is diseased (while still in the incubation period, after which it should be nearly immediately and automatically apparent) |

I can understand knowing they have a disease once things are made aware when it takes affect, but if you have no symptoms what are you using to determine one is even sick? Another question as well, if it is an equal DC to identify it as long term care, long term care takes 8 hours...how long should it take to identify? Keep in mind there are no symptoms. I'm thinking at least 1 hour. Ideas? |
| 1 ton ghost08-23-07, 02:33 PM | this is a good question btw. ultimately, it's gonna come down to how much intel you can give your healer before he diagnoses you. especially if they were there when theoretical contact w/ infectious material came into play. circumstance bonus? if it's still incubating, it could be very hard to ID like syphellis; it has 2 periods of dormancy between 3 nasty stages where the victim "looks and starts to feel better"...but his spine and CSF is starting to be corroded away. some are obvious: fightin' in the serwers, dire rat bite, etc., a healer could say, "hmm, should probably get you checked out." w/ a fairly simple Heal. DC should be close to Fort/Heal check to ward it off +/- modifiers based on what the dr. knows initially. some diseases make manifest signs before ability damage begins. blinding sickness might devulge mucus buildup in your orbital muscles, filth fever showing some irritaiton/red around bite all before actual mechanical effects take place. some aren't: you can have HIV for a long time before it goes full blown. how do you detect that apart from bloodwork? advice is pretty much similar to others here. keep Heal DC simlilar to cure DC but modify by what is known. |
