Why take heal? You have better things to spend your skill points on, and one lousy 0-level spell has the exact same effect as a DC 15 heal check, with 2 small differences: The spell heals 1 HP and doesn't require a check.

So..... Why?

1) Poison
2) Disease
3) You don't have to be a spellcaster so you don't have to deal with obnoxious vancian magic
4) Many GMs, like myself, expand the usefulness of heal checks to help discourage people away from the feeling that they need healing magic.

Also, heal can identify cause of death. Yes, I have seen it used.

Oh, and it's because you posted when the boards were wonky. It took about 4 minutes for one of my replies to go through, and the boards weren't refreshing themselves earlier.

Heal, the ability, is less specificly potent while always available and quite versitile. Magic can work wonders, provided the spell is available.

I've used it, and enjoyed it. This and some other non-traditional uses of the skill (i.e. harvesting animal venom off spider corpses) is one of the reasons why I'm always tempted to put a rank or two in it. Unless you've been packing speak with dead spells like there's no tomorrow, heal is very useful if the DM throws an adventure a la CSI:Waterdeep your way.

The heal skill is only as important as the DM makes it out to be.

It's logical to have a heal check to gauge how many hit points a creature has.

It can be used to determine cause of death of an NPC.

Someone needs to bind wounds on the cleric.

It can be used to identify poisons and diseases.

Its quite useful if you have a party member that needs stabilized and your clerics are quite aways off wearing their heavy armor.

Also the skill trick healing hands cures 1d6 damage when stabilizing a creature.

Alternately if you use Torn Asunder from Bastion Press (now DragonWing Games) like I do, there are now rules for dismemberment and truly critical hits which GREATLY expand the use of Heal.

Also my druid not to long ago used her vast ranks in it to save the party when trapped in an Ant-Magic area.

I think the spell 'healing lorecall' gave the skill a big incentive for clerics to invest in the skill.

Like others have said:

1) Healing Hands skill trick heals 1d6 when stabilizing someone.
2) Does not use up a spell slot to stabilize somone.
3) Gives someone a second save for posions.
4) Anyone can use it.
