We have a Hexblade in our party at level three and come to realize he sucks entirely. When we leveled up (to level three) I suggested he take a Swordsage level because of the way his stats were arranged but then I looked around a bit at Hexblades and there really is no room for growth. Does anyone know of feats or something useful combantion for them?

if he's non lawful i would suggest taking the entire Fey Heritage line of feats from the Complete Mage. He'd gain a 1 bonus to his caster level and the DC for all enchantment spells he cast, in which Hexblades get some i believe. He'd gain DR 5/Cold Iron which is the most important since he'd be in melee combat, he'd gain 6 spell like abilities with the DC's being based on Charisma. These spells are not low level and thus nothing to slouch on there is one other effect im forgetting but you get the picture. The Fiendish Heritage line of feats is also a good option.

If he has a Wisdom of 13 or better. I would suggest taking Combat Focus and Combat Vigor from the PHB2 for a minor fast healing ability.

Also Improved Familiar Winter Wolf if he could some how pull that off from Complete Warrior would be good to. Familiar Spell Link from PHB2 is also good.

Practiced Spellcaster and Ability Focus Hex would be two very useful feats. I would talk to your GM also about adding these, and others to the feat list for bonus feats.

There is an option in PHB2 to replace the ability to summon a familiar with a dark companion which essentially acts as an aura of -2 to the AC and saves of your important foes.

This is one of the best class features I have seen for any class. If I was to play a multi-class melee fighter (Barbarian X/Fighter X/Ranger X), I would heavily consider investing 4 levels in Hexblade just to grab this dark companion.

I second that, but I would highly suggest that as well. I would NOT suggest multi classing at all though. The hex is your best weapon, even if you can't use it too much. With the Vail of Allure and the Hex Bands which makes the DC on them manage able with the ability focus "Hex"

On Crystal Keep there are some curse-related feats. You wont get the full descriptions there, and Im not sure of the original source on them, but you can get that info there. I think they are from Dragon.
