| sapient10-28-07, 05:32 PM | I would say yes - certainly. The hide in plain sight ability (su) depends on using (the proximity to) shadows - even if not standing in the shadow itself. But a baatezu sees perfectly in any kind of darkness, even magical (also as a superantural ability). Effectively a devils sight isn't affected by shadows. Therefore it would make no sense (to me) unless that ability nullified the 'hide in plain sight' ability. But it would be a DMs call - the ability could still be partially effective, but the baatezu gets to do a spot check or something. |

A creature can't use Hide in an area of bright light unless it is invisible, has cover, or has the Hide in Plain Sight ability. Characters who have darkvision (dwarves and half-orcs) can see lit areas normally as well as dark areas within 60 feet. A creature can't use Hide within 60 feet of a character who has darkvision unless it is invisible, has cover, or has the Hide in Plain Sight ability |

Would a devil with their special darkvision see a shadow dancer using hide in plain sight? No.Hide in Plain Sight (Su) A shadowdancer can use the Hide skill even while being observed. As long as she is within 10 feet of some sort of shadow, a shadowdancer can hide herself from view in the open without anything to actually hide behind. She cannot, however, hide in her own shadow. All that HiPS does is give you another circumstance in which you can use your hide skill. Normally you need concealment or cover to use it. This gives you another option when you can use it. You are still hiding. The devil would need a spot check as normal. |
| Dheran10-29-07, 12:03 PM | goawayugh is correct. Shadowdancers don't need to Hide in a shadow. Nor are they dependent on the shadows providing concealment to anyone, or having any effect at all on other creatures; the Supernatural Hide in Plain Sight ability merely requres that the shadows exist. So all that's left is a simple opposed skill check. The devil either succeeds or fails, as normal. |

When a HIPS-character succeeds to hide from a monster, what kind of action would that monster need in trying to locate the HIPS-character again: just a free action on it's turn? |

From the SRD: Trying to spot something you failed to see previously is a move action. Trying to hear something you failed to hear previously is a move action. |

Spot/Listen is a free action when used in a reactive way (ie someone makes noise in the next room of the abandoned warehouse, you get a free action Listen check). It is a move action when you are actively trying to do it (ie you try to see if you can hear anything in the next room of the abandoned warehouse, or you are looking to see if you see anyone hidden). |
