Hiding in an alley from one side to the other: did we do this right? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Hi Guys,
I currently play a 2nd level Gnome beguiler. Last session we were in a combat that took place in city alleys during nighttime.
I was wondering if we use the rules of the Hide-skill correctly.

The DM ruled that nighttime with a moon makes it possible for creaturs without darkvision (like humans) to see clearly, but that it also creates shadows/concealment in corners and against walls in alleys.

The action I performed was the following:
- I was hidden in an alley and crossed another alley (10ft wide) to get to my opponent in order to cast 'color spray' in his face.
( BTW, My movement was enhanced through 'expedious retreat' making my movement 20+30 =50 ft/r)

- because that alley was just 10ft wide, we used the ruled (I've read this rule somewhere) that you while Hiding can cross an area between cover (or even concealment?) that has a maximum of 'half your movement': since it was just 10ft we assumed this was right.
- I didn't apply a penalty to my Hide-skill since I had 50ft move and with cutting my movement in half (25ft) I could reach him easily (PHB rule).
- th opponent was human

the situation was like this:

--------------------------------
.............O

-----------------............------
.......................l X.........l
...................... l............l

Me being te 'X' and the opponent being the 'O'.

Did we do this right?

I've think you can cross any area in feet equal to your hide skill and not be seen (within reason of course). It doesn't make much sense to me that expedious retreat would enhance hiding like that.

I'm pretty sure it says this under hide in the player's handbook, I can't check....need to find my book.

I'm pretty sure it says this under hide in the player's handbook, I can't check....need to find my book. :mad:The PHB mentiones something like this, but it has to do with hiding form someone that already saw you and you use the bluff-skill in order to hide someplace that is nearby.

I took a look in the Compl Adv and it says that you indeed can cover a space between cover/concealment equal to 1ft/rank of hiding: at 2nd level this woud be 5ft (5 ranks). Every foot covered like this imposes a -1 panalty on Hide.

Seems we were wrong. Strange how memory makes you remember things.

So the crossing of space is a bit clearer now, how about hiding while moving:

can you use the 'half speed so no penalty' rule with enhanced movement (as per the spell I mentioned)?

although I realise that the ruling becomes a bit unclear now.

Since the DM argued that we could hide along the wall, we could find a spot anywhere when it's just a 10ft wide alley, without (technically) needing to 'cross' 10ft or even a 5ft space: any 5ft-square is 'along a wall'.

By this ruling we would even be able to cross a 15ft corriodor at 2nd level, since the outer two squares are along the wall that gives concealment and crossing a 5ft 'innner part' is possible with 5 rank in Hide (although with a -5 penalty).

But maybe I'm approaching this situation a bit too 'machanically'. What you think?

My guess is that if you have concealment of some kind you can hide and move. There's no mention anywhere I know of about a specific penalty for that. There are even some variants out there about hiding in a crowd, might want to take a look at this and see what makes sense for you guys.
