Oookay... weird situation on my part. In summary, the party is being pursued by demonic nasties, and we need to run/hide/flee/not become demon chow/ etc. Most of the party is human, so no problem blending in, but my character is a gnoll... so how do I keep him from being a giant red flag saying "OVER HERE"?

Gnoll is a level Fighter 4/Ranger 1, LE. Budget of 3000 gp, but the less the better. No Disguise Ranks, Cha of 11.

I was thinking of investing in a Hat of Disguise, but it costs 1800 gp, which doesn't thrill me. Plus it's only a DC 11 Will Save to pierce, which isn't terribly helpful.

Whats the cheapest, most effective way of hiding him? Doesn't matter what to hide him as, just so long as he doesn't bring notice. This is a Planescape game, so theres a bit of leeway.

Have someone else disguise him.

You only get a Will save to disbelieve an illusion when you interact closely with it. PHB p173. Just looking at a gnoll wearing a Hat of Disguise on the street does not allow a save. Unless these demons or whatever are running a checkpoint where they frisk every single person, they will never get a save.

That depends on where you are trying to hide. Are you trying to blend in a human community? Are you trying to blend in with other demons? You can throw a big cloak over your characetr and use Bluff, Disguise and Perform.

I assume that what the give away is will be is a group of humans traveling with a Gnoll rather than mistaking your Gnoll for the correct Gnoll. If that is the case why, not make the other charcacters disguise themselves as gnolls and *poof* it's not your problem.

Disguise self spell will allow you to disguise your self as human (1st level) Alterself will physically change you (2ndLv). Reduce Person to make your self smaller and not so obvious (1st level).

On What Has Come Before:
The hat of disguise's Will save is only a problem if the demons feel you up:confused:; if they have true seeing, you're going to need other options.
The Disguise skill will allow a Spot check but slips under the radar of most magical detection, since it is mundane.
Any spell with "self" in its name doesn't help since you're not a caster (yet, anyway). If you want to be hard to find, first you have to know how you're being found.Gather Information: (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/gatherInformation.htm) Demons love to corrupt people; expect them to have contacts in any heavily populated area. If this is how you're being followed, you will want to avoid populated areas. If it becomes necessary to wander around in a city, make sure that you can't be recognized - the rest of your party should be wearing different clothes and concealing any unique features/magical items, and you will need to be scarce. Magical disguise, very good mundane disguise, or camping out while your party runs their errands should help you from blowing the party's cover.Track: (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/feats.htm#track) If they are then you can try altering the trail you leave (I can't recall a way to do this offhand but I know that there are magic items to help you here). Do not set foot on soft ground! Stick to hard surfaces to make it harder to track you.Scent: (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/specialAbilities.htm#scent) Unless your lead on your pursuers is veeeery small, scent isn't going to be helping them follow; if you think this might be a factor you should consider angering a skunk (but don't let yourself or anyone in your party get sprayed; this hurts you more than it helps you!)If they're tracking you magically, you're going to want to turn to magical means to evade them... which can be a bit difficult at level 5. If you're being scryed, you want to boost everyone's Will saves; if you're being targeted by locate creature you need a wizard or Trickery cleric to hit you with nondetection. If neither of these does the trick you're either going to need to call on an NPC for a big favor, or let your DM scoop you up (yeah, I know, it sucks, but sometimes we like our storylines more than our player's feelings). Note that since I can't read your DM's mind any more than you can, this last tactic could easily get your bucket kicked.
Best of luck sliding out of your DM's claws.

Cover yourself with grass.

No one ever pays attention to the Grassy Gnoll.

It makes the perfect disguise for a ranged attacker.

It also makes sneaking up on a Gazebo much easier. Click here to learn about the dreaded Gazebo. (http://www.netfunny.com/rhf/jokes/98/Jul/gazebo.html)

Get a minotaur horned helmet and then put on a tutu.

Trust me, nobody wants to look twice at a minotaur ballerina. (shudders )

However, once guns are introduced to the game, this becomes a bad idea. The second gunman will ALWAYS be on you.
