How Long to Scribe a Scroll under 1,000gp Base Price? [Archive] - Wizards Community

If a scroll's base price is less than 1,000gp, does it still take a full day to scribe the scroll?

For example, a level 2 spell scribed at caster level 3 has a base price of 150gp (2 x 3 x 25). 150gp is only 15% of 1,000gp, so would it take only 15% of the time? 15% of eight hours is only
1.2 hours.

Personally, it makes sense that a lower level spell would be easier and faster to scribe, but on the other hand this means that even a 5th-level caster could scribe many low-level scrolls in one day. In the example above (level 2 spells at caster level 3), that would mean (6) scrolls could be scribed in one eight hour day. Give the caster just 5 days of downtime and now he could have (30) scrolls.......hmmmmmmm...

Scribe Scroll feat description:

You can create a scroll of any spell that you know. Scribing a scroll takes one day for each 1,000 gp in its base price. The base price of a scroll is its spell level × its caster level × 25 gp. To scribe a scroll, you must spend 1/25 of this base price in XP and use up raw materials costing one-half of this base price.

Any scroll that stores a spell with a costly material component or an XP cost also carries a commensurate cost. In addition to the costs derived from the base price, you must expend the material component or pay the XP when scribing the scroll.

It takes a full day, no matter how inexpensive it is. But you can put many spells on one scroll, so that can save quite a bit of time.

A 1st lv scroll costing just 25gp still takes 1 day to scribe. Though you are allowed to scribe multiple spells on the same scroll up to 1000gp, but since you must actually cast those spells to be scribed, it can still be restrictive to lower lv spellcasters who do not have that many spell slots to provide.:)

The FAQ says 6 spells per scroll is OK, so as long as all 6 don't add up to more than 1000gp you can get those all done in 1 day (8 hours of work).

we ran across this idea too in our last campaign...

Our DM made the distinction that since they were bulky (i was using a hewarrd's Handy Haversack) i could take out a single scroll as a move action, but a scroll with mulitple castings would take a standard action to retrieve becasue of its bulkiness.

just thought i would throw that out there for ya... hehe houserule ftl

Personally, I'd think it to be a reasonable house rule that the scroll takes as long as you've calculated it should take (1*price day/1000), but you can only craft one of them things per day.

Thank god for the ability to scribe multiple spells on the same scroll then.:)

Yes, I recently got corrected on this.

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/creatingMagicItems.htm

"The creator also needs a fairly quiet, comfortable, and well-lit place in which to work. Any place suitable for preparing spells is suitable for making items. Creating an item requires one day per 1,000 gp in the item’s base price, with a minimum of at least one day. Potions are an exception to this rule; they always take just one day to brew. The character must spend the gold and XP at the beginning of the construction process."

We have now house-ruled that this is stupid. We have also house-ruled that you don't need to spend all of the time creating it in one batch, but that it takes an hour to get your stuff ready. Thus you could scribe a scroll of 1000gp in 2 days, 5 hours per day.

Well... we interpreted the rules that you need all that time because you must accomplish a complicated and long ritual to "prepare" the scroll to be scribed... and only the last half an hour is used to properly "scribe"
