In the Players Handbook, Intimidate is compared to Diplomacy, and it's reasonable to think it takes a minute to change the NPC's attitude to be more cooperative or compliant. I imagine this as the tough cop looming over the perp threatening them in conversation for a minute or more until they crack.

But you can also use Intimidate to demoralize and opponent. To quote off d20srd.org: Demoralize Opponent

You can also use Intimidate to weaken an opponent’s resolve in combat. To do so, make an Intimidate check opposed by the target’s modified level check (see above). If you win, the target becomes shaken for 1 round. A shaken character takes a -2 penalty on attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws. You can intimidate only an opponent that you threaten in melee combat and that can see you.

Now how long does that take? I lean towards a free action, liek a knowledge check, or at least a standard action. I imagine this as the Viking in combat roaring and generally acting so scary he shakes his opponents resolve. Surely, the PC doesn't need to dance around in melee for 10 rounds screaming "ooga-booga" to pull this off!

Does anyone know an official rule or have an informed opinion?

Its nice to read the action line, when you're trying to find what kind of action the skill use is:

Action

Varies. Changing another’s behavior requires 1 minute of interaction. Intimidating an opponent in combat is a standard action.
