| BeauJest07-17-07, 04:00 PM | Playing the Temple of Elemental Evil as Hazrop, 5th level CN(evil) gnome necromancer; core rulebooks only. I'm planning on eventually taking the Loremaster PrC. I have two routes: 1. Take Improved Familiar for CL6 feat, then Skill Focus(Know) at CL9 to enter Necro-9/Lore-1 2. Take Skill Focus(Know) for CL6 feat, have a standard familiar, and enter Necro-7/Lore-1 Back to the title question- How much fun is an improved familiar? I'm eying the Quasit. I like the fast healing, commune ability, invisibility, and skill ranks. I also figure if I pump some ranks into Use Magic Device, my quasit could be wielding a wand or some other magic items. The beauty of a common-speaking familiar. The early jump into Loremaster only really pays off at really high levels, but I don't think we'll go much past 14. Thoughts on the level delay for Loremaster for the Quasit? thanks. |

I don't often play casters, because i kinda like fighters (not from a power perspective, its just that i like fighters), but i decided i would try and meet myself halfway. I've designed a armoured arcane caster that im pretty pleased with (and no, its not a warmage), i also took improved familiar. Man, this will be fun. Hippogrif improved familiar = cool. Plus yea, the quasit is neat too (just for my character, i wanted something to fight and ride). overall, i would say the delay to get your loremaster levels is well worth the wait. Plus, a quasit has hands doesn't it? Given that he has all of your skills, and the hands to use them properly, that's awesome. one thing to keep in mind: take impoved toughness when you can. It doesnt require standard toughness (just a +2 fort save), and gets you an extra HP per HD. This is very good, as your familiar, improved or not, still has half your HP. Nothing says Oh Snap! like a dead improved familiar. |
