Hyuuga Jyuuken? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I was trying to think of a way to have the Hyuuga clan from Naruto in a D&D game, and was trying to find a way to have their Jyuuken fighting style. Weapon Finesse is a given, but I was also thinking of how to have them attack the organs of their enemy using chakra.

Jyuuken Technique
PreReqs: Byakugan

The user of the Jyuuken Technique is able to force chakra into the tenketsu of his enemy, and damage the organs themselves.

The character gains a touch attack that deals 1d6 damage. In all ways except for range and damage, it is identical to a Warlock's Eldritch Blast. The damage increases to 2d6 at 5th level, and by a further 1d6 every five levels thereafter. Strength is never added to the damage.

What does everyone think about this, without telling me about either the Psionic Naruto Builds or Narutod20?

Personally, I've always wanted to do a Monk/Cleric/Sacred Fist that worshipped Bahamut. Taking the Cold Domain, you can use Chill Touch. Every one of your unarmed attacks (caster level allowing), be they normal unarmed strikes or just touch attacks, deals an extra 1d6 negative energy damage, plus a chance of doing a point of Str damage. Not a bad mimic of Jyuuken. Throw in Weakening Touch for the ability to give a -6 penalty to strength, and you've got a convincing Hyuuga going on. You can even flavor the casting time as taking a second to activate Byakugan and study the tenketsu. :P

I suppose a Sorceror/Monk/Enlightened Fist could do this a little easier, but Enlightened Fist isn't as good a PrC as Sacred Fist, IMO.

Your feat seems pretty good. It's the type of thing that is pretty good and can be very useful at times, but isn't overwhelmingly powerful, which is right about where any feat should be.

I think the powe rDissipating Touch is the answer your looking for http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/dissipatingTouch.htm you can get it at lvl 1 psy war or psion depending on how martial you want your char to be, and it does 1d6 touch attack that gains a d6 every manifestor lvl.

Well, the Dissipiating Touch is what I was going for for the full powered Jyuuken, but I don't really prefer being able to get more than one attack per round.

I think it doesn't create a good mechanic to represent the Hyuuga bloodline's martial arts style, and is ultimately a poor mechanic and uses scaling mechanics unusual (read: nearly nonexistent) in feats.

True, the ability clearly does damage - the adult Hyuuga is seen apparently killing attacking ninja in single blows. The problem is that HP damage isn't even CLOSE to representing all that the technique does, which includes cutting off the ability to perform ninjitsu (in D&D terms, this should definitively be represented by spells, shadow magic, and psionics) WHILE STILL LEAVING THE VICTIM CONSCIOUS.

Naruto, in the Chuunin Exam battle, had his chakra COMPLETELY cut off, not allowing him access to his normal chakra to power his ninjitsu while still leaving him clearly in the realm of consciousness.

Also, check out Narutod20 and the Psionic Naruto thread. :P :D :)

I know it doesn't show all of the powers of the Byakugan, because something that has the complete sealing of all spellcasting power is a little too powerful for a feat. Thus, spells are used to supplement the attacks. Is there really a problem with feats scaling? We have at least one example in Superior Unarmed Strike, so what's wrong with a few more?

You say it's a poor mechanic? What would you change about it? I think it works fairly well because of one major point. The Hyuuga clan can use it all day long, without running out of chakra. Otherwise Hinata and Neji would both collapse during the prelims due to chakra exhaustion, and Neji would also be unable to continue doing the Jyuuken attacks against Naruto and all his shadow clones during the main event of the Chunin exam.

i dont beleive so, since neji would know that most of them where clones only using 1 pp would deal 1d6 damage enough to take out a clone if u make him a psion he can do it 343 times a day, or as a psy war 127 times a day. im pretty sure that is consistant with the anime. And if u dont like the one attack a round thing thats ok because at lvl 20 u can do a 20d6 touch attack, and just explain that you made 20 attacks, or 10 or 17 or whatever number you wish. at lvl 5 instead of doing 2d6 i can do 5d6, and 10 is 10d6, it really gives you the scalability you need.

The other powers of the jyuuken can be other psychic powers shown in the psychic naruto thread.

Mm, not so much. Neji THOUGHT it was completely cut off, but the Nine-Tails chakra blew through the seals. Had he lost all of his chakra, he wouldn't have even been able to move.

Hinata had her chakra depleted almost totally, and fell unconcious because of it. Had she lost any more, she could've easily died.

The Fighter way:

Go a Human Fighter (3 feats) and take:

1st lvl -
1. Martial Study (Shadow Hand maneuver - prerequisite to Martial Stance)
2. Weapon Finesse (hit with dex)
3. Improved Unarmed Strike (hit without AoO)

2nd lvl -
1. Martial Stance (Shadow Hand stance - prerequisite to Shadow Blade)

3rd lvl -
1. Shadow Blade (dex replaces str to damage while in 'stance')

Superior Unarmed Strike and Improved Natural Attack would come next, probably followed by the weapon focus and specialization skill tree (the TWF skill tree wouldn't be so bad either)

The Monk Way:

Go a Human Monk (2 feats) and take:

1st lvl -
1. Weapon Finesse
2. Martial Study

3rd lvl -
1. Martial Stance

6th lvl -
1. Shadow Blade

Slightly slower but you keep all those crazy ass Monk abilities and obviously will get flurry and such (once again the TWF skill tree wouldn't be so bad)

-Edit- Something you may want to consider is that if your DM allows flaws. If so, you could (theoretically) get Shadow Blade as 1st level of Monk if you took 2 flaws (which obviously gets you two extra feats). This would open the other feats up for more Monk based abilities or thw TWF tree a LOT ealier

Congratulations. (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=8536504&postcount=71)

Yes, he even gets the 128-strike version in there, as part of a round-by-round doubling progression, no less. And he does it in a way that doesn't slow the game to an *absolute* crawl as you roll all those attacks (just a lot of damage).

That thread is also why dissipating touch is known so well here.

Thank you, Tempest. That provides absolutely no help whatsoever since I had already said that I knew about the PNB, but didn't care to use them.

Neji knew that a lot of them were shadow clones, but not which ones, so he would have been forced to treat them all as possible Narutos.

Also, Crovaxen, you give out those numbers assuming he is a level 20 character. He really doesn't have to be, as I managed to even get Sasuke Uchiha at the beginning of the show as a level 5 character.
Crovaxan

I'm not saying he has to be lvl 20 im just saying that the scalability of dissipating touch is much better then the feat you suggested, because not only can you go that high, but you have the flexibility to adjust the strength on the fly.

Also i doubt neji was going full strength against the clones, he might not have been going absolute minimum but he wasn't going full strength, he was only getting rid of the clones while trying to figure out where the real naruto was hiding, and THEN he used his full strength, thats why IIRC he didn't go for a tenketsu till he knew he beleived where he was.

Even if not using the PNB, I still think that psionics would be the best way to represent a style like this. If dissipating touch is the full-power mode, you can always use painful strike or some such for "warmup mode." When you add monk feats such as weakening strike or freezing the lifeblood, you have a lot of versatility.

Sure, it might involve some artistic license. What doesn't? Just because the anime looks a little different from what you imagine things to be, doesn't mean they can't work the same mechanically.

I see nothing indicating that the Hyuuga fighting style doesn't consume chakra, given the VISIBLE CHAKRA FLYING OUT OF THEIR HANDS WHEN THEY STRIKE.

That it doesn't deplete it incredibly quickly (ala the use of Chidori in combat) doesn't mean it doesn't deplete it at ALL (ala the use of Rock Lee's taijutsu).

Suffice to say, using a technique that clearly utilizes chakra (Like, say, a taijutsu that projects chakra to damage internal organs) should expend resources.

It WAS completely cut off. Naruto's natural chakra pathways were blocked, and he was INCAPABLE OF USING HIS OWN CHAKRA. That he had an alternative source of chakra, and one that seems to follow an entirely different pathway, doesn't contradict that Naruto had all of his tenketsu blocked and he remained conscious.

Well, since it does seem to use chakra, and if it makes it a little better, than how about letting them do it at a cost of 1 power point a round, or per attack. whichever seems to be the better balanced. Well, what does everyone think? Yeah, it does force chakra through, but I always say it as a negligible amount of chakra, which is why I decided to go with the Eldritch Blast mechanic. And for some of the other abilities of the Jyuuken, I was planning on letting them take the Pressure Point feat from one of the dragon magazines.

Waaaaait a second, are you saying this touch attack is capable of being used with iterative attacks, ala an unarmed strike?

Nuh uh. No way. It's either the standard-action spell-like ability, or it runs the risk of being very, very abusable. Especially as a single feat, no matter what the prereqs might be.

Edit: I'm aware there's an invocation (or whatever it's called) that sort of does this, named Eldritch Glaive. That's nearly as bad, but at least you're forced to take Warlock levels to cancel that **** out, with a mere medium bab and a weak d6 hit die.

Sure it does. He remained conscious because he had an alternate source of chakra. If not for the Nine-Tails, he'd have dropped.
Mindolin

09-14-07, 03:56 PM
We can't really say anything about if Naruto would have dropped had he not had the Nine Tails chakra, as the only thing we have to go on is what other characters say will happen, when they are usually wrong.

Case for this: The Anbu. Several people mention that ANBU is the best of the best, and abou five got taken out by someone a Genin beat. On two seperate occasions. (Naruto vs. Kabuto and Neji vs. Kidoumaru.)
Crovaxan

09-14-07, 04:56 PM
well the differece is they don't expect the same level of combat with naruto as they do an ANBU and second he is using the power of a demon to augment his own. and you cant forget that he is the main character of the anime so he's gotta do the impossible.

but mainly i think it's the combination of underestimating naruto and his demon chakra.
unusualsuspect

09-14-07, 08:09 PM
Sure it does. He remained conscious because he had an alternate source of chakra. If not for the Nine-Tails, he'd have dropped.

Said alternative source of chakra wasn't available until he asked for it and the demon fox granted it. Naruto had 0 chakra flow after the 64 strikes, and only had chakra flowing AFTER he asked the demon fox, a good few minutes after the barrage of strikes.
