| Midrealm_DM10-17-07, 12:34 PM | Does this feat apply when wielding a two handed weapon? ...or only when using two weapons? Only on two weapon fighting... Our campaign uses a homebrew feat however. QUICK BLOCK [GENERAL] You may gain limited benefit from a buckler while wielding a two-handed weapon. Prerequisites: Dex 13+, Combat Expertise, Quick Draw, Base attack bonus +1, Proficiency in Buckler Prerequisites: As an immediate action you may apply your buckler shield bonus to your AC while wielding a two-handed melee weapon. This benefit does not apply if you are flat-footed, or otherwise unaware of the attacker (such as an invisible attacker or if you are blinded). The shield bonus must be applied to the first attack you take during the round, it may not be applied to attacks of opportunity against you, and using this benefit counts as an attack of opportunity for you. |
| StevenO10-17-07, 02:33 PM | A much debated topic. Do an advanced search of this forum for threads with Buckler in the title and ten posts or more to see what I mean. I contend that it works with two-handed weapons. Consider that you can wear a buckler under "normal" conditions when using a 2H weapon which you wield in part with the off-hand but lose the AC bonus. It is pretty obvious the "benefit" of this feat means you do not suffer that AC loss. The second arguement for having it work with two handers is double weapons. When using both ends they are treated as if using a one-handed and light weapons which everyone says can benefit from IBD. Now because "both weapons" happen to be part of the same weapon which is being weilded in two hands does that mean IBD should apply even if wielding both ends of a double weapon gets treated as two weapons by RAW. Carry that one step further and you should see that IBD can still apply when wielding that double weapon as a single two-hander while using only one end. |
| Jaxgaret10-17-07, 10:08 PM | As StevenO said, this has been a hotly debated topic in the past. There was one thread in which it was conclusively proven that, by RAW, IBD must work with THF. |
| Bopple10-18-07, 12:47 AM | Though RAW allows it to work, recent FAQ overruled it. But even the FAQ itself was not completely 'sure' of it(and betrayed that the Sage didn't do his homework on this, well enough). All in all, it depends on your dm's decision. |
| 1 ton ghost10-18-07, 12:09 PM | IMO (for what it's worth), we allow it for THW under the stipulation that you must elect which attack mode (THW or TWF) it is learned under. can't have it both ways, otherwise it gets a little, eh, abused. still, unless you're willing to spend $ to amp it, you're not getting alot of bang for your buck. bearing the physics, consider a blade in each hand and some quick reflexes to hoist your dinner plate of a shield up in defense. now consider a claymore, bastardsword, whatever in 2 hands. just kinda' go through the motions of basics and you'll see some reasoning. be your own judge. |
| ToastedAmphibian10-18-07, 09:27 PM | Well, if you want to get really picky, you could say that you dont even need the feat. Letting go of a weapon with one hand is a free action. Just let go at the end of your turn. Now you have your shield bonus, you just dont treaten with your weapon now. Not that i think trying to do this is a good idea, but run it by yoru DM if yoru having trouble getting him to let you use the feat with a 2H weapon. |
| Solaria03-10-08, 08:20 PM | Hmm, great point. This is something you can do with a 2h weapon that you can't do when wielding two weapons (unless you want to drop the off-hand weapon on the ground). |
