I know that there are tables in this book and that book for what you can pick up with the improved familiar feat but I was wondering what all the sources are of these tables. There are certain ideas I have for familiars and was wondering if there was a table I could find them on to see what the requirements would be to get that familiar.

A table (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/lists/feats&tablefilter=Improved%20Familiar) to the tables you seek

Can't pretty much anything of a sufficiant CR be used as an Improved Familiar? Foe example, I have a Sorcerer who specializes in fire spells who has an Ash Rat as a familiar.

Pretty much anything at least one size smaller than you which is around CR 1 or less should do.

Oh just go with an Imp, after reading the Traveling Gnome (http://ttg.comicgenesis.com/1-032.html) webcomic I know I want one Like Imp from there

I've tried everything I could think of to figure out HOW things are ranked on the Imp Familiar list and I can't.

Skiurids would be great for anyone that has even 1 necromancy spell. I had a TN gnome that was questing for one. was planning on "feeding" it chickens. just let my little buddy drop his three darkness orbs and chuck a chicken, cage and all, in. tada! 1 nut a day to feed, 1 for me (Think I had two necro spells) and 1 to save.

Hey. Lets work on our own list. Sounds like a good idea? Yes? No?

CR1 you say? With Improved Familiar? Umm... No. Not with winter wolves, hell huonds, and blink dogs on that list.

Where'd you get those three from? I'm looking at the Improved Familiar list on page 200 of the DMG. you get Shocker Lizard, Stirge, Imp, Quasit, Pseudodragon, Small Elementals, Celestial/Fiendish versions of the base familiar, Homunculus and Ice Mephit. All around CR 1. Where did you get that lot from?

Complete Warrior. Has the following:

Krenshar
Worg
Blink dog
hell hound
hippogriff
howler
Winter wolf

All require a slightly higher arcane spellcaster level and BAB than the two befor it, accept the last three. they need a ASL of 7th and a BaB of +7.

Well, specifically, I was looking for an elven dog/cat/something of that sort. Goes with the character's flavor and backstory, so that's really what I'm looking for.

Elven....cat? as opposed to a normal cat? Your words have confused me. Do you want a more magical familiar? Becouse I CAN find you a cat-thing that would make a nice familiar. One moment, I'll be right back after some book diving...

Here we go! Found just the thing for you in MM2. The Grimalkin. a medium sived TN domesticated shapechanger. Quite rare to be seeing one in the wild. Prefers its natual shape (oversized blue gray cat). They speak common and can be quite the chatter boxes. Go give it a look.

Pretty much any CR 1-3 creature is acceptable for Improved Familiar depending on caster level. Like I said earlier I used Imp. Familiar to get an Ash Rat for a character and I also debated with my DM over whether I could use it to get a Moth of Legend by slapping on the Monster of Legend template to a normal everyday moth because it only increased the CR to about 2.4. He said no to that one because he felt that that template shuold be reserved for monsters only and not pets people have tag along with them. So just remember, when you're scouring books for Imp. Familiars stay within reason. It's, honestly, my favorite feat for any arcane spellcaster and I've never played one without it just because there's so many options.

I know that they had elfin cats and elven dogs in 2ed., but I wasn't sure if they got translated over to 3ed. (particularly 3.5).

CR 1-3? Winter Wolf is a CR-5. Imp. Familiar has no logical progression that I've been able to find. I wish it did. I'd like to be able to get my skiurid before fifth.

Great..... Now where is my orcish parrot and dwarven goldfish?

Elvish dog.... I swear, if anyone tries something like that, I'll shoot it in the head.

I've only ever looked at CR 2 creatures for familiars because I never wanted to wait long before I could get them. The Winter Wolf as an Improved Familiar also requires a higher BAB than most Sorcerers or Wizards will achieve early on without dipping into martial classes so, I assume, that would account for it's higher CR.

True. caster level 7 with a 7 BAB. However, the howler and hippogriff have the same requirements, and are CR 3s.

Yeah, it is a 2ed. creature, but I was hoping that Wizards had converted it to 3ed or 3.5. Someone suggested Races of the Wild might have something in it, but I skimmed through it...........nothing that I could find.

EDIT: Found it. It's in the back of the Races of the Wild Book.

Start shooting.
