| nymdespana09-05-07, 01:06 PM | Sorry if the answer to my question is still somewhere in this huge amount of material, but I didn't find it. I read many posts about Improved Familiar feat, with many suggestions, but I didn't find a general and official "rule". What I mean is this: if you want an Imp you must be 7th level if you want an Ice Mephit you must be 7th level BUT Imp has CR 3 while Ice Mephit has CR 3... So... is there any core/non core rule about Improved Familiars you can have and at which level (for example the creature must have CR = your level - X) ?? Thank in advance guys!! Nym Despana |

That is why ECL was created, because a creature with a 1/day ability has the same CR as a creature with a 1/hour ability, but the 1/hour ability is MUCH more powerfull for a Player, who is going to last for more than 10 minutes after meeting the Party. If I were going to do something like that, I would need ECl, because what you are doing is using the creature as a constant companion. But usually creatures appropriate for a familiar do not have an ECL. End result: I don't think any formula is possible. There is too much differentiation between say a Ravid (3hd, 5CR creature with 1/round Animate Object) and say an Adult Arrowhawk (7hd, 5CR creature whose special ability is an electrical touch attack for 2d8 1/round) |

But... my question is: "is there any general core rule in DM or somewhere else, about which cratures you can take and at which level?" I don't think so, but my huge ignorance about rules makes me asking to you, wiser people. tnx again Nym |
