| LordArcheron11-03-07, 03:03 PM | Hi, I have a balancing issue: Having the feat "Improved Metamagic" either from the Epic Level Handbook or from the prestige class Incantatrix makes is possible to reduce the spell level cost for metamagic feats by one. Some DM houseroule (and i am also thinking about to do it...or not) that a "metamagiced" spell would always cost >= 1 level, never 0. But if i allow the 0-level-cost, does Improved Metamagic applies to every metamagic feat i apply to a spell? Or only the sum -1? Example: A still-silent-fireball is normally level 5. With Improved Metamagic is it level 3 or 4? Thanks, Dirk |

That's not a house rule unless you're talking about metamagic feats that don't change the spell slot level.Improved Metamagic [Epic] Prerequisites: Four metamagic feats, Spellcraft 30 ranks. Benefit: The spell slot modifier of all your metamagic feats is reduced by one level, to a minimum of +1. This feat has no effect on metamagic feats whose spell slot modifier is +1 or less. Example: A still-silent-fireball is normally level 5. With Improved Metamagic is it level 3 or 4? It's level 5.A stilled spell uses up a spell slot one level higher than the spell’s actual level.A silent spell uses up a spell slot one level higher than the spell’s actual level. The Improved Metamagic feat is applied to each metamagic feat independently, and has no effect on either Still Spell or Silent Spell, as the red quoted text above dictates. |

The DMG2 contains the nerfed version (which simply subtracts 1 from the final slot adjustment), while the ELH/SRD has the quoted version. Either way, the slot still cannot be reduced to zero or less. Only arcane thesis is capable of achieving that.:) |
