If I have the improved trip feat and I use a weapon (suitable for tripping) for this manouvre, do I gain the +4 bonus on my strength check or not?

It says under benefits:
You do not provoke an attack of opportunity when you attempt to trip an oppontent while you are unarmed. You also gain a +4 bonus on your Strength chenk to trip your opponent.
If you trip an opponent in melee combat, you immediately get a melee attack against that opponent as if you hadn't used your attack for the trip attempt.

I couldn't find anything in the FAQs or errata, so a reference to some official ruling would be great!

Yes you do, whether your using a weapon or not. That's why there's no distinction or specification in the description of the feat. The strengh check only refers to the amount of 'pulling' or 'pushing' your doing; you could be trying to literally wrestle your opponent to the ground or hook a weapon on his ankle and pull. I think that's the official ruling, there, in the feat description.
