Is there a feat that gives a character proficiency with improvised weapons? I'd like to have a feat that makes my character able to pick up something and fight effectively (if not brilliantly) with it.

There was a 2nd ed proficiency. I'm sure there has to be a feat to reduce the penalties. You'll never get full proficiency in ALL improvised weapons.

Well I have good news for you, my like minded friend! In Paizo's Pathfinder alpha release there's a feat chain for improvised weapon antics. Of course, the thing is meant as a D&D 3.75 and the races/classes are bit much, but I'd suggest looking into it (the Alpha is free. Just gotta make an account).

Fight With Anything, page 59 D20 Apocalypse. I cannot post the feat as doing so would be a violation of the code of conduct.
