| BlackOracle05-22-07, 10:46 PM | Why is there such a difference between the Innate Spell feat from Player's Guide to Fareun and the Complete Arcane? Which one is the one that is supposed to be used for general game usage? The Complete Arcane one seems absolutely useless to me but I could be wrong. Thanks for the help. |
| Flintlockhandmedown05-22-07, 11:48 PM | Complete Arcane is closer to core, so I'd use that, unless you're playing a Faerun campaign. Besides, what's useless about a level 18 sorceror with infinite magic missiles? Or an epic level with infinite fireballs? |
| runestar05-23-07, 12:43 AM | The CA version technically supercedes the PGTF version, though I would stick with the PGTF version, since I find it more "playable". The CA version will probably either be severely underpowered or overpowered depending on what spell you choose. Besides, what's useless about a level 18 sorceror with infinite magic missiles? Or an epic level with infinite fireballs? The fact that you do not get infinite rounds to cast them infinite times...;) |
| Nezkrul05-23-07, 12:55 AM | what about infinite disintegrates or heals? :D - I can do this by level 24 btw. :D |
| sigma99905-23-07, 01:12 AM | The feat is underpowered and problem lies with specific spells. I'm beginning to believe that any spell too powerful to give to an Outsider as an at-will SLA should either not exist, be of a much higher level than what it is (possibly epic), or be extremely nerf'd. |
| runestar05-23-07, 01:20 AM | what about infinite disintegrates or heals? - I can do this by level 24 btw. Good for you then. My games generally never go past mid-to-high lvs, so I have little interest in a feat which effectively requires me to be at least epic to trick out properly. :( Though I do not see how you can innate a 6th lv spell at lv24. It requires a 14th lv slot, and the highest you can possibly have by then are 12th lv spells (taking ISC trice). And since the CA version of innate spell is not a metamagic feat as far as I can recall, effects which normally reduce metamagic slot costs such as arcane thesis or easy metamagic would offer no benefit here... The PGTF version offers far more utility early on, IMO. Such as my 5th lv wizard using it to take fireball or haste as a SLA 3/day. Combined with the specialist caster option in complete mage, this helps resolve one of the problems plaguing spellcasters at lower lvs - too few spell slots.:) Alternatively, because the 2 are so functionally different, I see nothing wrong with letting them both co-exist side by side. :) |
